Hey all! Sorry for spamming topics on tons of stuff but I want some feed back on this model Ive been making for my map "Operation Paraquet" for the Falklands mod.
The story is that the Argentin(ians?) arrived in multiple ships I believe but they also had a submarine that was disabled during the conflict, so I want to make one for my map.
p3d.in - Sante_Fe v0.1
Ref pics (thx Psyrus) There aint that many that I could find
It is too simple to use
The bottom is flat because it will be underwater so I didnt bother doing anything to it. I also have a model that has a interior, 2 rooms and a tunnel to the top and entrance on the front hull but I didnt know if I should use it or not, cause it would be pretty easy to get camped in it xD
I dont know too much about ships so any additional things to add onto it for detail would be nice.
I would like to learn how to properly model so any tips on anything would be nice
~thx
sorry for the annoyance

Usually when people make a model, unless they're
really artistic and knowledgeable, they work off a bunch of reference pictures. Are you using any for your submarine? Pictures would show you where you needed to put more detail
Furthermore, textures contribute a lot to the final 'finished' look of a model, especially for something like this, which in all honesty is quite a simple shape.
One thing that does appear to be missing is your propeller & rudder, and most submarines seem to have inset round things on top, conceivably the openings of missile tubes.

Not sure if that's a typo with the name, but I'm pretty sure the first name is "Santa" and not "Sante".
Nice model btw. It's going to look pretty sweet.

Thanks midnight, but most of those details are underwater and no one will see them, but I think ill add a rudder and add that curve on the nose of the sub going downwards.

Hey, I actually know something about this!
The Santa Fe was the USS Catfish (SS-339) , and there are tons of refernce photos (and schematics!) online for the Catfish,
USS Catfish SS339 Home Page and Crew List
Submarine Photo Index
14 minute video of the sub:
Submarinos Argentinos en Malvinas 1982 - YouTube
List of all the known sister ships of same class that were converted to Guppy II class after WWII:

Just make sure the USS Catfish photos are dated after early 1949 when the mast was converted to the Guppy II design.
Also make sure you don't model the next upgrade called the Tench Class. Again, the mast changed and the Tench class was was made bigger (longer).

So that new class.. tench..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARA_Santa_Fe_(S-21) I was using this for length and size on the right there has specs, so those are the wrong size for it?

looks pretty nice
you can probably use the interior for a static model perhaps?
would be cool having a small firefight inside a sub

I did model a interior... It has 3 rooms and could expand it the length of the sub if I wanted too

I think you should, to be honest, it'll give it the opportunity to be a reasonable stronghold!

I think it would be a bad idea to make any kind of interior for it. To make a decent interior will take a lot of time and tris. Having an empty corridor will just look ****. Then from a gameplay POV, anyone moving about in it is going to have a really hard time though these narrow corridors, meeting any player in them will mean one will need to back up to a passaging space... Also since I'm guessing this is going to be slightly keeled over to one side and slightly sunk like in this pic here, that will make moving about even harder to move about inside...

All in all, the things you need to ask yourself are:
1. What dose this bring to the gameplay?
2. Is it worth the time/effort to do?
3. Is it worth the tris and extra textures required (also including the extra lightmap space as well as any custom textures for pipe work etc)
To me, I can't see an interior doing anything for gameplay. While on the face of it, it might sound cool, in practice I think it won't work very well. Time to do a good interior is massive, talking at least 2 months of work, depending on how many rooms you have, most likely more.
Also from a realism POV, this sub wasn't battled over on foot, was just shot up by choppers from what I understand?
