Hey,

i'm probably going to college this year, and therefore i have to sell my desktop pc and buy a laptop. Since i'm only playing PR:BF2 and Source Mods, i dont need an expensive gamer laptop, i just need one to play the mentioned games.

Does anyone have a few recommendations for me?

BTW: my budget is not that big...

greetings

Asus N series are pretty good. I currently have the N73J and PR:BF2 runs smoothly no problems, also most other games as well.

i got a asus k53s with i5 and gt 540m videocard and 4gb of ram. works fine on high settings.

only problem i have (not sure if this is for al laptops) is that the screen resolution cant go higher than 1366x786 instead of the 1980x1080 on my "21.5 inch monitor.

I got the N53 and I run PR with all high settings, i5, GT630 and... 16 gb of ram...
But yeah definitely Asus are the best laptops, and quite cheap, or average.

Could be in tech support? More likely that one of the PR tech guys will see it there.

Anyways, agree with all of the above. ASUS makes good laptops. And how big is your budget? A couple of hundred bucks on a laptop could be the difference between a dedicated GPU, i7 CPU, etc. See my point?

You really should give the price range which you can afford.
Check this link from the german ebay site for A10-4600M laptops for around 519.5 euros (+18.5 for P&P):
A10-4600M | eBay

The A10-4600M APU has the HD 7660G which has a similar performance to a GT 630M, the processor component itself however (although a 2.3GHz quad-core with turbo core up to 2.7GHz for all cores or 2.9GHz (I think) for only 2 cores) performs similarly to a dual core i3.
On the bright side, it's cheap, power efficient (the whole APU uses 35W), and can work really well for OpenCL optimized programs, so in the future, any games/applications supporting OpenCL will be better optimized for trinity APUs (which the A10-4600M is the flagship mobile APU of).

EDIT: I was referring to the Packard Bell Easy Note laptops, which you'll see as you scroll down the link's page.

The one Ome recommends is really good, those AMD APU's, especially the A10 are amazing for what they are.

Talking to a computer repair tech - he says Toshiba are the most reliable laptops he's seen (going off the stuff he gets called to fix). ASUS are also pretty good according to him.

I'd stear clear of Acer and Compaq. HP can be hit and miss, their high end stuff is good but pricey. Same with Sony.

I myself have a 4 year old ASUS M50VC - it's starting to show its age, but it still plays PR like a baws on Med graphics. This is coming from a dual core, with 2GB of RAM and a Geforce 9300M...
I've got a problem with my KB though, so I'm using a plugged in keyboard. I've had probably 3 BSODs in 4 years, and they were all due to Vista - now on Win7 and haven't had an issue.
In fact, apart from the age showing (and the keyboard issue) - I wouldn't consider replacing it. I'd certainly go ASUS again.

When you get your new latop, consider picking up a copy of Win7 and reformatting straight away to clear all the **** they install on them.
(And consider getting a tablet to take to lectures and stuff!)

I wanted to revive this thread to give a testimonial. I had been penny-pinching and fretting for years to replace my ageing desktop (2005 Compaq dinosaur with single-core cpu and an 8800GT graphics card). I kept seeing my fps decline over the years as the PR team kept squeezing more out of the BF2 platform than anyone could have dreamed of at release. Even simple 2k maps became unplayable for me at medium settings.

Finally the dinosaur died and I needed a pc for connectivity with family scattered all over the world. Reluctantly I bought a 510 Euro ASUS X54H off the internet to get my skype, email and internet phone back online. Out of curiosity I used my old BF2 CDs and loaded BF2, then Project Reality and Mumble. On max resolution (1366x76 8) with nearly everything at High Settings save two items and AA turned on I get from 35 to 80 fps, even on the buggiest, biggest maps. I could not believe it.

The moral of the story is that the BF2 platform is so old that even new, low-end rigs can manage PR:BF2. My ASUS notebook X54H has an i3 2350M and the Radeon HD 7470M.

The real question is why after so many years are we still playing PR:BF2 with its terrible graphics and limitations?

Answer: Because it is still one of the best sandbox, tactical first-person shooter experiences available today. It is the community.

Bf2 is a very old game, anything that has come out in the last 5 year should be able to run it easily, unless youre buying something very cheap. You wouldnt even need to buy a gaming laptop.

As long as it had a dedicated GPU you'd be fine. If you got a more modern CPU the integrated graphics could most likely play PR:BF2 with no problems. My old laptop with a Intel dual core and a nividia GT8600M ran it on max graphics.

Had an Acer first utter shite - like my mate screen died after 13 months hot enough to keep a cup of coffee hot.

Been using an MSI GX720 since then 100% reliable and so much cooler

IMHO Asus or Toshiba are very good although didn't the gamer ASUS have serious problems at first??

Although I'm so happy with my MSI I'd get another. But when I bought mine the graphics was set at 59hz (some CRT Vista hangover) but the local shop managed to sort it back to 60.

But aren't most portables made by Clevo anyway?

Also IMHO Sony are a bit **** and hot too.

Just like to point out that an i3 + HD3000 combo is not enough to play PR. It runs, but is not playable by anyone's standards (except falklands and Kashan).

Get a discrete graphics card if you're going to be gaming on a laptop.

You should probably go to a retail store and use the keyboards of various laptops from different manufacturers.

For example, the Lenovo Y series, i.e. Y580 series has incredible specs for the price, but I find the keyboard impossible to game on.

The MSI laptops have a horrible "chiclet" style keyboard I also find impossible to game on. impossible to touch type on as well.

But everyone has to make their own opinion on those keyboards, some people like the chiclets because they strike the keys with a more vertical downward thrust.
