To PB or not to PB

PB= Punk Buster

Our community is made up of alot of regulars. And we use unranked Bf2 servers to host this mod. I feel like we would all know when someone was using a hack. When you play PR as much as we do its very noticeable. Over the last 7 months I have noticed a ton of players getting random disconnects by PB. Most recent there has been a surge in "Loss Packets". And it is killing the game for alot of people.

My question to the R-DEV's and the community is this:

1. Do you feel PB is important for the life of the game?
2. Do you have issues with PB and if so what are they?

thanks, can't wait to read.

Once you get PB running smoothly there don't seem to be problems.. hasn't be an update in ages so where would the problems come from? I do think there needs to be a guide on how to get PB setup properly - manual update.

When you run PR and all related 3rd party programs as 'Admin', I don't see any problems other than server related crashes.

This has absolutely NOTHING to do with getting PB set up correctly. NOTHINGGGGGGGG.

Looking at the latest bans for BF2 there are a couple of recent ones on PR Servers. IIRC there have not been any discussions about those players in the Server admin section for suspicious play. My conclusion is that they were flying under the radar as there has been discussion about other players as being suss.

So in answer to your questions:

a) Yes - without a viable alternative (and I mean a system not open to abuse or a kangaroo court) we will just have to work at identifying and resolving issues as they arise.
b) No. Win 7 x64.

I have had a lot of trouble with PB over the years, but as long as it bans some of the hackers IT's OK ...

Afaik running PB is a requirement for running a PR server. :|

With Anders SM enabled, I seem to be getting dropped connection a lot more, no reason specified by the server.

I think it has to do with my computer being low on memory and too much swapping on my HD.

With SM disabled, I can expect to finish a game without getting dropped.

I only have 2GB of memory. I think SM takes up more RAM.

I might add that installing the punkbuster service is way better because it's good for bypassing admin privilege and it updates itself automatically.

I had packet drops, so I re-installed the service.

PunkBuster Online Countermeasures

I've seen on PR

Bur saying that in 2008 I got a PB ban for a 'gamehook' that can only have been caused by Teamviewer running.

We have not so drasticaly problems with PB. PackageLoss means often process is gone or connection lost.

Many people had problems when they used wireless LAN and BF2/PR PB. Wireless can have a disconnect over a short period of time but enough to get killed by PB. ;-)

That is correct plod, "gamehook" doesn't necessarily mean someone was hacking or a hacker.

Yep Tabbing out of game due to FPS drop when your anti virus is running a schedualed scan, once it comes to the BF2 folder and the program is running, shutting down the antivirus program mid scan of the PB protected files can cause a game hook violation.

This ban was appealed by Klutz and rejected by EB. Either he gave a weak appeal or there are other programs that trigger the same violation.

He hardly ever plays PR (ArmA dude and if you knew him he is the type of person who would sell his Nan before using a hack. He was beyond upset when we told him he had to leave the clan.

I make sure I dont have my anti virus do auto scans.

As mentioned before, Im of the opinion that it is requierd for the PR licence.

Very mature attitude you got thar.

PB ban lists for one and 2secs of search resulted in this

Although likely the guy isnt in a known clan it proves the point that there will always be cheaters.Always has been and always will be.

I had a video of me following some guy who was clearly hacking from a clan but I cant find it anywhere.

There was also an aimbotter on CIA i think few days back... we have followed him and yes, jumping from target to target, 22-3 KD in a record time, people were dropping like flies. LOLY617 is his name, btw.
