"Whump Thump" insertion

O.K.We all know about the glory boys HALO; but the vast majority of airborne insertion is by good old "whump thump" i.e. a low level static line from 800 feet. Why is this technique not replicated in PR simulation ? As an ex-british army officer( with para wings), who enjoys gaming, I would like to know? :?

Two possible reasons:

- It's quite a specific, situational procedure. Arguably not commonplace.
- The effort to implement it far outweighs the gameplay benefits.

That being said, if you take up modding for BF2/ARMA2 and implement it in a decent fashion, I'm sure the devs would be happy to give you feedback and consider implementing it if point #1 above isn't true :)

The parachute is PR behaves like a round cap, there is just no model for it yet. FH2 has one, though.

Yeh , I've only schuted on round caps, with kit, for rapid insertion; and we have some control, but the model doesn't work.

Out of interest, what's the minimum alt for a drop in RL? I heard somewhere it was pretty low!

British paras only grant wings to 800 ft, with kit
.

Both threads merged, let's keep this in one place. For clarification: This thread is about PR in general, both PR:BF2 and PR:Arma2.

Thank you, but my experiance is that both parties do not communicate. I apologise for posting the thread on both sites, but I felt that it was critical to maintain reality.

Paradropping in BF2 PR is usually pointless because the maps are quite small, the helicopters have small capacities, and you cant paradrop supplies. Further still considering the time it takes, 2 flags could turn by the time you've paradropped.

If the game was much larger, slower, and realistic, then it would be more relevant. I imagine it would be fun to play 4 hour games, where an hour involves loading up at base, sitting in a C-130, jumping behind enemy lines, setting up a little FOB, and then conducting an attack on a flag, but again, that's outside of PR's scope..

Unfortunately, there is only so much we can do to simulate airborne operations in both of these engines. The best we have got to simulate that right now is spawning with an open parachute at a certain position and altitude. Even in the massive 8 x 8 km ARMA2 maps, conducting a mass tactical, low-level static-line airdrop from player controlled aircraft with player controlled exit is just not feasible or very realistic. Airborne ops aren't a maneuver conducted by small unit commanders to reach a distance of a few kilometers.

Also bear in mind we have the player-flown helicopters in game that allow the functionality.

LGOP s ftw

for those that dont know what lgop is, click here

quote from the link: This is, in its purest form, small groups of pissed-off 19 year old paratroopers. They are well-trained, armed to the teeth and lack serious adult supervision.

but 40mm is right...and he reminds me of me....an officer comes up with an idea and we figure out the gayest way it will be implemented....lol

so if implemented devs dont forget to add the "paratrooper waddle" animation out to the aircraft.

oh and 40mm i was thinking ur second paragraph was being sarcastic...if not i apologize, i dont think it would be fun...lol

Better off getting a current scenario that works. Fixing silent eagle so it's actually paratroopers vs mech inf combat team is a better start, rather than combat team vs combat team who starts with a paradrop.

800 is a normal jump with the 82nd Airborne.

To the devs anything other than your base infantry is not the average soldier.

Although there is a large amount of airborne certified soldiers among even just the regular units. For clarification i'm speaking of the US army & have no idea about any other military, though i'll bet the British have quite a few.
