Video Tutorials

I know a lot of people don't like to read a long manual. Personally I've never read the whole thing, but I've played long enough to know what I'm doing.

I've seen and talked to a few people that are almost.. "afraid" of playing PR because of how confusing it can be for a new player.

So I'm planning on working on a few in depth video tutorials with professional voice overs and graphics. I've done many similar projects for corporate videos, and I feel this game could use one.

I had been planning this for a while, and just now started really getting into it.

So what I want from the community is a few people that know PR inside out. I've been playing for years, but avoid a lot of things like squad leading, flying, etc so I'm still pretty amateurish in those areas. And people to help me with scripts and ideas of how to organize the tutorials. I wouldn't want them to look like someone is reading off the manual and showing a powerpoint, but rather something that shows more than the manual.

For example the manual never says to stay away from the squad leader when he is placing an FOB, or that making early squads can ruin the game, etc (or it might)

I feel this way more new people can start playing the game. I know we all hate noobs, but the mod will die if we really don't get more people playing.

With 1.0 coming out soon I'd like to start uploading these to the serpento99 channel we have available with 38k subs mostly from the battlefield world and hopefully entice some people to get back in.

And with the whole Battlefield 3 crowd which is filled with moronic dumbasses that the learning curve of how to use notepad is too hard for them, having nice graphical videos for people with the attention span of a squirell would help.

I've already started working on some titles: http://4st.me/713QX.png - http://4st.me/vIPJA.png

Thanks all! Brezmans offered a private server which would hopefully allow us to do some acted skits. Time to brush up on those machinima tools for bf2 :S

The biggest suggestion I can give you is to wait for 1.0 or more info on 1.0. It's not long now and obviously there will be some changes and additions. Making the tutorials for .98 seems like a waste of a lot of effort and time.

But obviously work can already be prepared such as layouts and storyboards. But I think for the core filming waiting is the best solution to make sure your tutorials can be future-proof. You seem to be skilled in video editing so imagine a series of tutorials that will be the standard for 1.0 and will get new and old players back into the game. And that's what we need!

I also had a little team of people ready to make tutorials for 1.0, we already had extensive storyboards and people to assist. I'll see if I can track em down and let them help you as I'm to busy ;)

Good idea Ricky! MineralWouter has a point though I'd hold fire on the actual scripts and specifics until 1.0 is released or you've seen a full change log.

I'm a busy man (who isn't) but I'd like to help. I've made tutorials just by myself in the past where I do talk about the little things like FOB/ Asset placement and squad bugs etc but they're a little out of data and not too professional.

See the links in my sig for an idea of how I did it and I'd be happy to give info and advice when it comes to scripting etc.

Cheers, Murkey.

Makes sense Mineral. It would be great to start getting some info from beta testers. My goal would be to have a few done by 1.0 so I can start marketing it to the new people.

But it sounds like Devs are pretty quiet about it.

Right now I'll be working on the insurgency one, which from what I've heard hasn't been changed too much.

Don't get me wrong, the beta testers(like me) will not give you any intel that the DEVS have not already given . We signed a NDA and we keep to it :) All I'm saying is it's worth the shot on waiting for the 1.0 full changelog or wait for the 1.0 release to film your footage in a release that with no doubt will be the standard for PR for a long time so that your tutorials are accurate and up to date for many releases to come :)

Idk about insurgency, but it's worth to for example already in advance make a a couple basic videos about movement and concealment, or a good way to have comms in squad or between SL's, or some basic military tactics. Basically things that will not change. For core PR stuff I suggest to wait for 1.0.

A good ol' NDAs, I've lost count of how many I've signed :)

And that's basically what I'm doing, right now I'll just like to start with the basic things and avoid things that might be changed with 1.0 so much. And yeah I could get things ready and film the basics, thats not a bad plan too

My guess is that if you could wait for the PR 1.0 release with releasing the videos, you could probably get in the Alpha/Beta/Gamma testing of PR1.0. I think instructional videos would be a good thing to launch with PR1.0 to get the new players more integrated from the start. Somebody could give you a R-COM tag or what its called for community and you should be set.

(Just a proposition, i am in no way associated with the developers or testers)

I'm not originally looking to get into beta testing, but releasing 1.0 tuts at the same time w/ the update would be cool :)

R-COM are solely for Tech Support, would be best to approach me (or a red tag) about these things.

You know, you are right. Short howto video's would be a good idea that could be post linked from realitymod.com by us users. Segment them so that they are no longer than a couple minutes.
I'll work on a couple after 1.0 comes out.

Here is one on how to bust a hip to sexy sax in BF3 I just found. So now you know!
