My suggestion would be to defragment your hard drive where BF2
R is installed. Some of the bigger compressed files are probably fragmented.
What version of BF2 do you own?
I suggest downloading mydefrag.com then downloading the specific Steam and Desura defragmentation script, and learning how to edit it if needed:
