"Problem with your connection" for a friend of mine

We seem to get this constant headache when we connect to any servers (although it does seem to vary per server in extremity) that ever 5 or 10 seconds he will get a connection error. We're in the same house, using the same connection (I'm wireless, he's wired through a homeplug, but has tried his own wireless too), and yet he gets errors that I never experience.
It doesn't seem to be only when we're both playing, which is what we suspected at first, and additionally there was a time when we played for a few hours (having just forwarded the ports BF2 uses to his machine) without a single problem. That was about midday, and every other time we've tried has been in the evening when internet traffic's at a high. We're on a 30Mbps contract, and in general they're pretty good at delivering that (although I only get 15 max because of how far away my machine is from the router, he however is right above the router or is wired in).
Have literally no idea what to do, but would appreciate any help whatsoever as we only really play when we can squad up together...

this is a stupid question perhaps,
but you aren't playing off the same CD key are you?

Yeah, so MineralWouter makes a good point. Can't have same key connect to a server multiple times simultaneously.
DOwnload speeds in terms of plumbing have two components, bandwidth, (30Mbps contract) which is the diameter of the pipe, but also latency, which is the consistency of the water supply moving through the pipe.
On top of that, you might have a jitter problem, this is a inconsistent ping to and from the PR server, this is not uncommon to occur using the HomePLug technology on older or incorrectly grounded home electrical wiring.
You should run some tests from speedtest.net and test using the fido.net London test host,
You should go to pingtest.net and also use the fido.net London host.
If you have any lost packets, high jitter, or inconsistent Ping, it'll help determine what your options are going forward.

EDIT: You might want to download and install newer Network interface card (NIC) and wireless (WiFi) drivers for your friend's PC.

Ok, thanks a lot. One additional issue, is that to install his, we simply dragged and dropped the files from my PC to his, then installed through steam. Done that plenty of times, and it's never been an issue, but perhaps that could spark some CD key problems? Seems kind of unlikely, but we'll see.
We'll explore the other issues, although it has been tried with wireless and with homeplug to no avail so far.

Interesting question I don't know the answer.
As I understand it, you archived his BF2 files on one PC, then transferred them to the other PC and used steam to reinstall?
I have no idea if the CD key is transferred in the Steam backup file.

Another update, my friend seems to get bad signal when we're trying to stream online television even when a speedtest's telling us we're getting 30Mb (which is what we pay for, and rare) while my laptop at the same time can stream the HD version without interruption.
It makes me thing it's the wireless card that's to fault, but that wouldn't explain why he still has difficulties on PR (and vBF2) with connection interruption when he's plugged in through homeplug, unless there's some kind of shared component (wireless and ethernet) that is faulty or just a bit shit.
Any advice? Anyone know any better? It's a Dell XPS 17, and I've researched a couple of problems that it could be, but I'm open to any new ideas.

Dragunova, you could be correct,
couple ways to troubleshoot,
You really need to get a network cable, and plug his laptop directly into the router or even better directly into the modem. Then try the speed test. and the jitter tests.
first, try to download newer LAN, NIC and WiFi drivers for his laptop. You might need to find drives directly from the WiFi chip manufacturer, i.e. Intel, Atheros, Bigfoot, etc. if needed, you can post his laptop model info, I can help you find that info quickly.
..........
Another line to pursue, wire directly into your router with your laptop, then set up your laptop's WiFi to share internet connection. Then have your friend connect his laptop through WiFi to your laptop.

Homeplugs, I can't help you, I have helped friends & family with that technology a few times, only once did it work. And only at DSL speeds.
