New guy to Project Reality

Afternoon all, before I begin I had a quick search to see if there was a newbie section and the T&Cs didn't mention it so apologies in advance if this is the wrong section.
Anyway hi all, I'm James from Scotland. Been playing BF2 ever since it came out and never really got round to BF3. Was interested in Arma2 through CHKilroys Youtube videos. Basically I had gotten tired of the "quirks" that BF2 came with and wanted something a little more realistic. Just by chance last week I came across Project Reality :smile: . Finally something that can really get BF2 alive again! I have watched a few of the youtube videos/tutorials and also downloaded the turtorial pdf and read a few reviews online. I can't wait to get stuck in although grasping some of the realism is a little daunting. Any tips you can pass would be greatly appreciated. I'll be downloading it today and hopefully have a look at it tonight and get used to all the cool new things.

Just a little bit about myself and BF2;
I'm currently flying and being taught to get my Private pilots license with the goal of commerical later on in life. This means on BF2 i'm usually happiest piloting a Black Hawk and letting everyone in the back get some good shots in or when i'm on the ground its a mix of assault or medic kits in squads especially. Got a little tired of people being silly online with the standard 1.5v so looking forward to some great teamwork and a more emmersive experience with this mod.

Cheers all,

James

Start playing as infantry, play at least few runs before taking heavier asset. If you want to take something heavier try it first on local server, so you don't get banned for crashing chopper. Install mumble 1.0, because it's mandatory on all good servers.

What I did was to set my clantag to Noob or beginr and introduce me to my squadleader as noob. You get much more slack and people help you a lot more. This is a old mod and people often forget that there is new players on the battlefield.

Moszeusz6Pl already said it and it's really important that you start as infantry. There's a lot of rules on every server about assets and there's the mechanics of PR, both will make it a hard game to learn. Once you get a feel of how PR is played and what the general server rules are, I'd say in a week or two, you can start practicing on the heavy assets such as CAS or armor. Practice local or on a training server first, it's not the same as in BF2 but it's not that difficult either.

Welcome, good luck, and stick with it! It's very rewarding once you have climbed the learning curve!

Hit up the single player co-op to get a feel for the weapons.

It will definitely make it easier for when you go into the multi-player scene.

If you want to do transport, you should practice alot.

Project Reality Tutorial #7 - Flying Transport Choppers (Huey) - YouTube here's a little tutorial.

Excellent, cheers guys. I realised I wouldn't be in anything heavy at first as assets are alot realistic. I think i'll try Single player like you suggested first and see how I get on. Also viewing the help files for Mumble as I type this.

I started without singleplayer and in my opinion just hop on to multiplayer after reading the manual.
Join a server than a squad and tell the squadleader that you are new.
You'll learn along the way.

Slorgs youtube tutorials are really helpfull too.

The game revolves around infantry, transport/cas/armour are all used in support of infantry so as others had said it's important to understand how infantry win fights and conquer maps. Once you understand the concept of AAS and when/where the fights will be (might take a bit but PR has a really natural flow to it, and in time all good players learn how to use the flow of battle to their advantage).

Don't be shy about asking questions or taking cool kits, but always be on the same page as your squad leader! Hope to catch you ingame sometime soon.

Thanks Murphy, I realise that its going to be alot more than what BF2 is for me atm but i'm a little tired of being on servers where no one wants to communicate or have some form of teamwork so I am up for the challenge and will not have a problem being a team player. On another note i'm watching Slorgs tutorials and the first one speaks about map packs and a Vietnam pack. I can't find either on the downloads page. Are they all in the 3 downloads and the patch available?

Cheers.

Patch 0.98 include all 4DLC(mappack, Vietnam, Normandy, Falklands). Only thing you might want to download is SP mappack for PR0.95(but still works) and Test Airfield map, but you don't need it if you want to only play on regular public servers.

Would you recommend the test airfield?

This map was made for testing purpose, it have all air asset on them, with very short spawn time, so if you want to check all air assets, it is good idea. It's also used on some of training server. Although it isn't so good for practicing flying chopper, because map is very flat at most part, so I you are not beginner, you should better learn at other maps.

Ok thanks, also on the 3 of 3 install should I click or unclick the DICE Alt-tab fix?

EDIT;

So far so good, just the patch left. I also downloaded the "Anders soundpack" is this already included or should I leave it for now?

If you tell your squadmates you're playing with that you're new to the game, you'll get a surprising amount of help. Everyone remembers when they were in your position, so don't be bashful about asking a bunch of questions, regardless of how silly they may seem. It's refreshing for old players to see new people getting involved in such a long running mod. I personally enjoy when I'm squadleading and I hear "I'm new to this mod, what should I do?" Some people might roll their eyes at you, but it makes me nostalgia and want to help :P

And yeah, stick to infantry for a while, assets can be pretty knowledge intensive

May i ask exactly how did you find out about PR?

I would also recommend you get used to Mumble.

And as people have said let people know you are new and start as infantry. Your Squad leader may not let you have any fun kits for a while but you need to learn the basics of infantry before you get more advanced weapons.

Anders soundmod isn't include in 0.98, you can use it if you want.

Well just by chance actually. I realised a week ago that there may be some good mods out there for BF2 so I googled top ten mods and PR was 3rd I think but your trailer sold me lol. Just had a quick play about on a co-operative local server (I presume that means single player) and i'm amazed how its transformed. Need to read the .pdf a bit more and understand Mumble too as I didn't have it running as it force closed on me when I first started it. I will stick with the default sound and maybe later experiement but I am impressed by what i've seen so far.

If you're looking for a community that is tight knit, loves to help others out, and loves to communicate, you've come to the right place. I've played this mod for a good 3 years and I can't recall seeing any "elitists" in the PR scene. Everyone here in this community will help you out if you just ask, just be sure to use the search bar.

I'm not speaking on behalf of the Project Reality community, but this is what I see. I don't think you will be leaving any time soon.
