Sound settings: how do you have yours?

Evening forum dwellers!

Having recently removed my shockingly bad aural input from the equation and bought myself an actual headset (a Microsoft LifeChat LX-3000 to be exact!) and i was wondering how you guys have your audio settings set, both in-game and on mumble (and TeamSpeak if applicable) so i can actually get some decent use out of these bad boys!

Also - i'm currently guilty of running in-game volume at 100%... and therefore it must be changed, but what to???

Also also - feel free to brag about your awesome audio set ups too :p

What i did was put ingame to 100% and then lowered it to 20 or so in windows. That way the sounds dont cut out at distance.

It's this, or the other way around, depending on if you need to talk to people or not. That's the easy way at least. Just can't hear people on TS and mumble if they both are on max when shit hits the fan :-P

I think it's depending on playing style - if you using vehicles much more than going infantry - you will decrease sound volume to 20-30% after some time :)

I use beats solos, and I have the in game sounds set to 33% then just crank the volume in windows, never noticed any distant sounds cutting out. I used to like the inability to hear people in the midst of a firefight, helps with immersion, but since I've started more squad leading, I decided the stuff that I was missing was more important than the immersion from overwhelming sounds :P

I don't think mumble does it, but you can adjust the TS volume independently so it's as loud or as soft as you want compared to PR.

Just hit the sound icon in the system tray, then click mixer and adjust from there.

I find that what you change in windows audio settings can make the most difference. Especially loudness equalisation, so you wont strain as much to hear people over ear bleedingly loud engine sounds.

Its low enough to hear people on TS, albeit a bit hard when shit does hit the fan indeed.

I play on mumble only servers so i really dont need voip.

+1 loudness equalisation is really good imo. As a guy that plays most infantry I have my in game sound to 85. I play with earphones and I keep it loud enough so I can hear enemy footsteps but low enough so I can hear people talking over mumble while driving vehicles.

I got my in-game volume on 15% - 20% since I installed the soundmod , after shooting a AK mag my ears began to bleed so I changed it from 50% to 15 - 20% also because I play more with vehicles now compared to a few years ago.

Is there a way to make engine sounds quiet without making all the effects quiet? And is it possible for the dev's to simply edit those sound files to make them 50% as loud?

X-fi Titanium with 4 pairs of headphones plugged into it, 1 pair of bigger headphone drivers for bass channel and a splitter for the bass/center channel. arrange them correctly in a headset or earmuffs and you have real 7.1 surround sound headphones  i also used 3.5 mm extenders so the cord is really long 8)

i use them whenever i want to play loud stuff at night, or i want more precise surround effects... like PR!

my settings are simple, x-fi renderer for eax 5.0, 50% windows volume (only effects analogue out) and you can raise whatever program volume you want on the program itself. If i want to switch to surround speakers i click the mute button on my keyboard and unmute receiver.

How do you mean exactly? Do you mean while sitting in a vehicle? I depends if you were referring to that. We try to aim for some kind of realism here so making a vehicle sound 50% less sound pretty weird to me.

It's worth noting that the crewmen (at least here in Norway) have active sound reducing equipment in the headphones they use while operating the vehicle. So you can't just stick a mic in there and see how loud it is, because yea, without them it's bloody loud, but with them on, its not so bad.

What mike was suggesting was to lower only engine sound and be able to listen to the surroundings easier I think. I agree with Anders that lowering the sound only on engine would not be realistic at all.

I guess what your referring to is to make it quieter and simulate that your wearing ear protection so its easier to communicate with people on mumble without the need to turn down effect sounds so much. I think some Apc's are very loud from the driver seat, but most tanks have a good level of noise.

Inside muffling has been done on the choppers.

Outside, stuff makes noise... either turn off the car or do comms inside.

I used in game at 100% and windows output at between 30 and 50% with headphones and a cheap sound card.

As for hearing comms over the in game noises both TS and mumble can have shortcuts set to change their output volume on the fly. I use [ and ] for TS and Ctrl+Shift - or + for mumble.

Works like a charm :D

I don't really understand what you are using, but why would you ever want to cut down PR sound to 7.1 :S

Hey, I'd recommend you to use a program called Volume2 instead. With it you can control volume of the active application (if you play PR it's gonna be PR) with any key you want (key and mouse wheel is the easiest). This way you only have to control volume of 1 app instead of 2 which is a lot smoother.

Here's a linkif you're interested.

On topic: My volume % is set to 35, my settings are Creative X-Fi, EAX, Ultra High. Because you can't independently control volume of PR when you're on Creative X-Fi I have set up a script that allows me to select between 5 different volume profiles with a simple press: Win key + 1-5. So 1 is for when I am in a loud vehicle, 3 is usual infantry stuff, and 5 is critical listening.

I meant due to Mumble not automatically lowering the in-game volume when comms come through if you play the game with the engine sounds ('Effects' tab?) set quite high so it's realistic, you can't hear the person talking.

It's my understanding that people that use assets a lot turn the volume of PR down and the volume of mumble up. I play infantry and if I'm driving a logi truck I can't tell wtf anyone on Mumble is saying to me.

The Brit Logi and the Canadian (mercedes) jeep are the worst offenders.

Although it has just occurred to me that I should turn my game volume to 50% and my mumble volume to 100%.. Rather than both at 100.

It is annoying though. Our ears adapt in 'reality' well enough to hear quiet sounds when it's quiet, and to filter out specific tones when it's loud (talking in a night-club for instance). I can't see how it's a big deal to reduce the volume of vehicle noises if you're in them. A brit logi is louder than a tank ffs!
