Visual c++ runtime error

What I did
I just installed bf2 and the 1.5 patch, I changed the process to use only one core because it would crash. I played a game and there were no problems.
Problem
I install pr0.97 I startup the game and I get the popular "Microsoft visual c++ runtime error".
My attempts at a fix
I tried changing the service pack compatibility to xp sp 2 on both bf2 and pr exe. I made both run on administrator.
People on the internet claim this problem arises because of an old VS version or some outdated tech. This is a newly installed OS with VS2010 the newest drivers and upgrades. Is it still possible for something to be outdated?
Why did the game work before the pr install? I'm downloading the 0.98 patch in the hopes that it will fix the problem.
