I read somewhere that mics are required if I want to play on any server. Is that true because I don't have one...

It is.

You NEED mic to enjoy PR fully.
Otherwise you will not be able to call out contacts in emergency...etc. because you cannot type words fast enough and not everyone will be looking at left of screen to see it.

With 1.0 changes; you will be shot, a lot, if you do not use local chat to announce your presence when entering friendly-occupied building while battle is going on.

Generally mic is good to have; in other games you need it to yell at 12 year olds when they fail/you are not having fun, in PR you actually need it to have more fun.

some servers don't mind if you don't have a mic as long as you do the best you can to communicate

but you'll not enjoy the game half as much without one

With nametags being removed, people will often ask you things to confirm your position. Even as far as 'are there friendlies there?' before throwing a grenade into a room. Would suck if you'd be too slow to respond...

You're US American, so I guess you speak English. You can pick up a cheap mic for 10$ or so, certainly worth the investment.

Local voicechat is a great thing, that does not work with a keyboard.
A mic is practically needed. I played a few months without one, it was fun but painful.

And don't be afraid to talk, no one should have a reason to mock you for your voice or anything. Generally as long as we can understand you and you're not a little kid, we don't care.

No they are not.Been playing for many years without one.Its a pain to get in sqaud as bad SL's will insta remove you sometimes if they can't read green text.

Although its terrible if more then 2 guys in a squad have no mics and damn right impossible in a silent squad unless you all know exactly what your doing.

Mic is a MUST for this game.

Welcome to PR none the less. Once you do play you will be coming back no matter what you might think of the lack of graphics and need of MICS.

The solution would be to drop a few dollars worth and buy a mic.
You're basically making the game harder for everyone by not wanting to buy one, just saying.

Not necessarily true, more likely

People without mic in PR = less effective and harder to work with.

Anyway, as many have already pointed out a microphone GREATLY improves the overall gaming experience and facilitates the collaboration. Those few dollars shouldn't stop you from getting one, unless you have a problem speaking with pedos over the interwebz :p .

Just wanted to say that you shouldnt be afraid to use mumble even if you are young, If you show mature behavior and teamwork every sane SL will want to keep you in his squad, regardless of the pitch of your voice.

RadioShack has a headset for $7.99, I've used the same model for years now. You are missing out without one.

I got a Logitech G35 for around $120. The cord is extremely durable and I can't see it breaking any time soon. It also came with software to change your voice to a troll.... (I'm serious)

You should definitely invest in a $20 dollar (or less) USB headset to play PR with. It just makes the game better.

Not true at all. Does anyone remember 'Ishotcha' from the TG server a year or two ago? He didn't have a mic, but was still a great PR player.

Microphones not required but once 1.0 hits the servers most squads do require the usage of your mic. Be ready for that.

It's all about trust really. I wouldn't have an issue playing with a mute player I already know is good at the game. I'll give him simple instructions and he'll follow them, if he fails he'll be able to write a quick note in the chat and we'll come help. A problem is if he goes down though, we wouldn't be able to know what killed him unless someone was watching or we heard the potential shot.

to me the discussion is not on if a player without a mic can be a "good" player or not. It is more for me an the squad and team I am in have fun and be immersed in the experience. To be honest I find players without a mic a bit boring and not able to play in a close teamwork environment.
