Every time I have been on a side mounted gun on a helicopter i shoot the enemy but cant seem to hit anything. Sure it looks cool, but does anyone else share my "performance" issue.

You are probably not hitting anything.
Miniguns shoot "normal" bullets, tiny (if any) splash damage. You gotta hit directly in order to kill.
By the way, the side mounted guns are NOT an exuse to use trans helos as attack helos. They are there as a last resort to supress and keep away enemies that are trying to shoot you down.
NOT attack helos...

The hardcored delayed hitboxes of the BF2 servers, low splash damage of the projectiles, a moderate rate-of-fire on the HMG's, bullet lead compensation. Now imagine doing this while moving in a chopper, and you'll see why you're not hitting anything.
On the other hand... the CAS version of the Huey with M134 Miniguns can be extremely effective against most targets.

Edit: The reason HMG's are mounted on Transport choppers in the first place is to suppress any resistance facing the dismounting troops in the choppers. The Soviets often tore through landing zones by providing suppressive fire to counter the threat of RPG attacks against choppers by the Mujahideen

90% of people dont take physics into account and dont lead a target. I see that EVERY god damn time when an APC/MG is shooting at a moving target. People are extremely lacking in that regard.
I have delivered good enough suppression fire from the doorguns, but its hard to score kills as others have said.

Some of what you see is the BF2 limitations. The gunner might actually be leading a target but on your screen it looks as if he is aiming almost behind it.
If you are aiming at something that is not traveling very fast you should aim directly at it since the hitbox is just behind it and the time it takes your bullet to reach it will be enough "lag". Only if it is travelling fast you need to lead the target more.
in short: the gunner see it how it is supposed to look and the spectator see it as the hitbox detection sees it. confused?

Yeah - Watching sniper vids I noticed they never lead in PR.. However to shoot a Huey down with it flying at full speed I aimed about half it's length in front of it (with the BTR) and got good hits.
Remember there is also a 10m/s delay between your eyes and the real world, not to mention min 5m/s delay from your monitor (20m/s for some), as well as the inevitable 50 m/s lag (not straightforward I know with how games work but worth a consideration) - It's no wonder that the only way to learn to lead a moving target online is to practise (and actively try to improve whilst practising).
