I have created a petition on change.org for DICE to open source Battlefield 2. I think that if we get enough signatures, we can atleast merit some kind of response from them. Please, sign this, and share it on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, anything. Seriously, every share counts, because it opens the door for more people to sign and share with their friends. If we can pass 10,000 signatures, I think it's realistic that DICE will respond in some way. Don't have the "my signature doesn't count mentality" or "my share doesn't count mentality", because it really does. If you care about PR, and you care about the future of the mod, (such as becoming a standalone game), then sign it.

For those of you that don't know what it would mean when the engine is open-sourced, it would essentially mean that the developers had free range with the engine, and that they would be able to make any change to their heart's content, including getting rid of previously unfixable bugs, greatly improving performance, implementing previously impossible features, and getting rid of existing engine limitations (such as the 8-player limit on vehicles or the massive graphical limitations that the engine imposes). Even if you have no hope for this happening, please sign this, as it costs you nothing more than 5 seconds of your time, but shows DICE and EA that the community really does care.

I mean, there's an Open Source page here from EA Open Source

Realistically, like Lucas Arts open-sourced the two jedi knight games, they did that due to the oldness of the game and they don't sell it on retail.

And, like that, Battlefield 2 isn't on markets anymore but online. And when it's online through Origin, it makes money.

So they'd probably not open-source it unless it's not giving them the profits they desire, and they feel nice. Once a company open-sources a game, they can't make any money off of it I don't think. Or maybe they can, even though open-sourcing it essentially means you can make your own games, and engines built.

If EA has like a competition to make the best game out of old engines that can turn indie developers into contract developers making games for EA, it would benefit EA all the time while keeping that cheap $9 Price Tag on Battlefield 2.

And since Battlefield 4 is coming, more and more there will be less players. And besides, there's only under 1200 at max players (Rough estimate figures guessed) including mods (Project Reality being the one with the most servers)

So, in short, I'd like a discussion to weather it's feasible to open-source it from a big company's stand-point.

But for facts: One developed said that in 50 years, the EULA agreement would expire, and that's when it would be open-sourced but I doubt that. Last update for Battlefield 2 was in the 9/1/2009. That's 4 years ago! So it would be wise to open-source the Refractor 2 Engine. Though really, I think the devs would prefer the more updated, next-gen CryEngine 3 used for Project Reality 2, that is basically Project Reality ported for CryEngine but with all limitations removed, and theoretically it can support 256 players online.

Unless EA still can make a profit, it's up to EA, not DICE. Dice would probably love to release the engine, but they have an agreement with EA. So take it with a pinch of salt.

Project Reality has probably made a couple thousands dollars richer.

Maybe we could just pay EA to release the source code. Where's that guy who wanted to donate 200k $?

EA still uses the engine for battlefied heros. They cannot make it open source. And even if that ended or never happened they still wouldn't have made it open source.

they havent made 1942 open source, there's no way in hell they are going to make BF2 open source any time soon.

Bf3 was the last EA game (and what a disappointment) I will ever purchase from that arcade company. They have managed to ruin all there franchises within a few years. Simcity, Command and Conquer and Battlefield to name a few.

I've lost hope in this company.

Come on, we're talking about EA here. Voted one of the worse companies ever by many. And it is. Maybe in 10 years, but as someone noted - it's still being used in BF heroes.

Not only BF Heroes, also BF Play4Free and BF2142 (uses an upgraded version, but still). BF1942 hasn't even been released (open source) and don't think it ever will.

BF1942 is free now, so...
It's funny cause there were 1000 players on yesterday on 1942.

With the release of Project Reality 2 within 3 to 4 years, I don't think there's a valid reason to modify the PR:BF2 to a larger extent. Cryengine 3 removes almost all of the restrictions present on the Refractor 2 engine, updates the graphics to a modern standard, increases the server population cap, enhances the performance of the game(No more <4GB memory limits), and will appeal to a larger percentage of gamers.
