Win XP Crash on Startup

I've installed everything the Project Reality files, Patch v4.1 and v5 and still it won't work (yes I've re-installed Project Reality as well). It keeps crashing after the Intro Movie after that the dog tags with PR on them will come up for about 5 seconds then the whole screen goes black and returns me to the desktop with it saying "PR: BF2 cleaning" or something like that. I really want to play this mod and I need someone to tell me how to fix it. Can someone help me?

Welcome to PR, let's get you sorted out,

Start vanilla BF2, login, join an online multiplayer server. Shoot a gun to make sure it works.
Adjust your audio and video options now.
Save options.
Exit vanilla BF2.

Start PRLauncher, click Options, Click Reset Profiles, click Yes.
Click Play, import your vanilla BF2 profile
play PR, to test.

Let us know if this works.

Open the PRLauncher, go to Support button, the system specs will appear, Copy to Clipboard and paste here.

Are you really running a Processor: Intel Pentium III Xeon processor (Physical: 2, Logical: 2)?
Can you tell us the exact model number?
Intel? Pentium? III Xeon? Processors with 100 MHz FSB
Intel? Pentium? III Xeon? Processors with 133 MHz FSB

DO you own a Dell Vostro 220 or 220Slim or what?

You can buy a used CPU, some thermal paste and a CPU cooler, but your PC is old enough I can't readily find the list of compatible CPUs.

I do not believe your CPU can run PR.
I am not sure it can run vanilla BF2.

It can run BF2 on High settings, it can also run Arma 2. and I'll get back to you with the other stuff.

Indeed, I just googled that processor, I haven't actually used one since 2002ish... my mistake.

let's try the other option:

step 1. start with fresh profile files.
Start PRLauncher, click Options, Click Reset Profiles, click Yes.
Click Play, retrieve your profile from GameSpy

step 2. minimize the video RAM being used:
Start PRLauncher, click Options,
UNCHECK the Fullscreen tickbox, click Apply
click the Graphics tab, set all to low, click Apply.

Start PR to test.

--------------------

The other problems might involve too slow a HDD, too slow a CPU core, or highly fragmented PR files.

A defrag of C: will do you good.

Now for the long term, you want to use the Large Address Aware option here:
Make sure you pick the correct choice, i.e. WinXP, and either 32bit or 64bit.

Next try this:
[R-COM]LITOralis.nMd wrote:Try removing all the windows UI graphics options, basically make your winXP look like WinNT, you can use this:

For Windows XP:Tweak UI - Free download and software reviews - CNET Download.com

For Vista, 7, 8: Ultimate Windows Tweaker, a TweakUI for Windows 7 & Vista

and turn off all the windows UI stuff, like windows shadows, mouse shadows, maximize windows animation, etc.

Also try Razer GameBooster Razer Game Booster Free Download, Speed Up PC for Top Gaming Performance to shutdown unneeded background processes.

Let's try another approach:
  1. 1. Write down your BF2 login name and password
  2. 2. Rename the directory C:\Documents and Settings\George2\My Documents\ProjectReality\Profiles to C:\Documents and Settings\George2\My Documents\ProjectReality\ProfilesBackUp
  3. 3. Start PRLauncher. THe profile importer function will start, do NOT import your profile from vBF2, instead use the retrieve profile from GameSpy option, and enter login name and password when prompted.
  4. 4. In PRLauncher, Click Options button,

    In the VIDEO TAB
Choose the smallest resolution with the correct refresh rate for your monitor.
    Untick the Fullscreen tickbox.
    Turn Off the AntiAlias
    Disable VSync
    Set View Distance to 75%
    CLICK APPLY.
    In the GRAPHICS TAB
    Set all settings to LOW.
    CLICK APPLY.
    CLICK CLOSE.
  5. 5. CLICK PLAY. Test PR.
