Hi there folks,

I would like to upgrade my system somewhat to increase FPS for PR, spending around 300 euros. What would you advise me to do?

I have the following system:

It is not a bad system you got there, and in my experience your going to be disappointed overall when upgrading when aimed at bf2 since it only really takes advantage of 1 cpu core.

You could try and find a fast dual core cpu but then other applications might start running slower than before.

I think you should look into overclocking your current cpu or some other software tweaking first, before deciding.

Not sure if a gtx 560 ti would do you much good but in other games it does give a good boost over the gtx 550 ti

It's also rather "cheap" for it's performance.

New video card. The rest of your system is good.

Id definetly go and upgrade the Graphicscard, 8gb ram and a quadcore are ok.
Go for something like an HD 7870.

With that rig you should be able to run PR without any problem with +/- 60fps.

What are the problems that you have now?
How many processes do you have running in the background?
How many CPU and memory do these processes use when you are doing nothing on your pc?

It's a very 'clean' system. No 'exotic' background processes there. I even disable the anti-virus program when playing.

I think the FPS could be much and much better. For instance FPS drops to 20 FPS on the Falluja map when facing the middle of the map. Laskar Valley drops to 33 FPS when doing that. The maximum on that map I noticed was 70 FPS. I have all graphic settings on low, except for effects.

Thank you. I had already overclocked the CPU a bit to 2,8 Ghz by the way. What do you mean by tweaking other software?

I guess I should go for a new GPU rather than a new CPU right?

Your FPS drops are most likely not a hardware problem and shouldn't warrant an upgrade.

Though there is no solution yet.

I don't think I have concerning problem. I am not sure but I think I had pretty much these FPS rates and behaviour with previous versions too.

Well windows for starters can be "cleaned" to run without all its "company" features enabled etc. You could search for some windows tweaking threads on Google. there would be a lot.
Also your grafic card settings could probably be tweaked a little bit without loosing a lot of detail and get some more fps.

I hope by disabling your anti-virus you mean that you turned off full scan schedules or something like that. It is a very bad idea to disable your anti-virus software as long as your online. You could easily catch some spy-ware or add-ware by mistake and that would slow down your system much more than the anti-virus itself.

Modern anti-virus work quite efficiently, and will only draw resources when it needs it, and if setup correctly it will "wait" until other demanding programs like bf2 has stopped running before it performs some less important maintenance.

A running firewall is of-course a must!

Since you use a quad-core and bf2 most likely only use core 0 (the first core) the anti-virus would probably use one of the other cores and you won't be able to tell the difference at all.

You should be able to force windows to only allow the antivirus to use a certain core manually if you want to make certain but mostly the automatic works just fine.

That's strange then.

I had a very similar setup before I went to school, (same GPU and a slightly worse CPU, and same amount of RAM) and it ran previous versions (0.97 and earlier) fine.

I bought a E8500 3.4 second hand very cheap, I haven't been able to test in PR yet.

Afterdune has a similar system he posted recently about it.

Here are nice choices for a decent upgrade with shipping to the Netherlands, what is your PSU by the way? AMD Radeon cards will have a bugged terrain if set above low last time I checked. Use the rest of your budget to upgrade your platform for other reasons. That being said, your setup is decent and should be doing fine in PR.

Honestly, I'd not do anything.
If you already OC'ed to 2.8Ghz, there is no reason to drop any money on this system.
You'd do better building a super stripped down win7 install ISO

and as Ploddit mentioned, possibly "downgrading your CPU to a dual core C2d with higher clock speed" and OC'ing the C2D, possibly pick up a better CPU cooler, but if you can OC the Q9400 quad core, you have a sufficient CPU cooling solution.

I havent played with desktops in a while, but would 300 euros not be enough for a new motherboard+ a fast sandy bridge CPU?

i7 920 @ 2.66 Ghz = 20 fps drop falludja full server

i7 920 @ 3.8 Ghz + Hyper TX3 EVO = 40 fps minimum


Gpu : GTX460

[1]CPU has too low Single Thread Performance.

[2]Upgrading Graphics Card wont do anything.

Best Price vs. PR Requirements

Intel I-3220 + LGA 1155 Socket Mainboard.

Example: Upgradekit Intel Core i3-3220

Mine runs at 3,6 GHZ and i still have hard times on Dovre if the Germans are loosing Ground...

U will have to up V-Core and the FSB to be stable

Dissipation power = squared Voltage Core x Frequency
Not worth the amount of work and testing imho.

Try getting ProcessLasso and unparking your CPU. I've noticed a 15fps increase in performance in RO2 and PR after unparking my cores.
