[Map] Utrecht Hill Ridge (4km) [WIP]

Hello people! This is my first map design, so feel free to criticize, I haven't started with the map in BFeditor yet, but I plan to do so very soon :)

Image

Name: Utrecht Hill Ridge
Location: The Netherlands
Size: 4x4km
Factions: Royal Dutch Armed Forces vs Russian Armed Forces (AAS); USMC if the RDAF development is not on time.

Background;

After several months of war the Russian Armed Forces have overrun the eastern defenses of the Netherlands. The Dutch, now desperate in their scramble of their last units, decided to make another stand at the Utrecht Hill Ridge, a vital position due to its hills and it is a last resort before the Russians can enter the vital Randstad. In all haste, the Dutch have called up the citizens to expand the Dutch Marines' Base in Doorn with a helipad, while the Russians are preparing in the nearby village of Amerongen to defend from the upcoming army.

Map info;

Based on the real life Utrecht Hill Ridge in the Netherlands, it has a real Dutch Marines' base in the vicinity. With the hills protecting the vulnerable Randstad economical and political area, this is certainly a vital position to hold.

Vehicles;

This will be determined by both the dev. of the RDAF , while the RDAF is still in development, there can be that this map is released earlier than the RDAF itself, in that case, the USMC will fulfill the RDAF's role.

RDAF (Dutch)

6x Landrover jeeps
3x Logi Trucks
3x Transport trucks
3x Fennek recon vehicles
4x APCs (don't know if the RDAF team makes the YP or the CV-90)
1x Leopard 2
1x Chinook
1x Apache

RAF (Russians)

6x UAZ
3x Logi trucks
3x Transport trucks
3x BMD recon vehicle
4x BMP
1x T-90
1x Mil Mi 8 Hip
1x Mil Mi-24

You can't really make a 4x2km area. Although you can with combat area though. So the size will be 4x4km but you'll limit the players to only use half of it. that can work I guess. Good luck ! ;)

Thank you very much! This isn't a really very well thought project yet, so it is probably full of holes, yet, I feel this will be a great map :)

Again, if you have anything to notice, then feel free to say so :)

yeah what Mineral said but I think you should use all the map.
Anyways I can see that it involves hedges, that is a really boring thing to do especially for a 4km map , If you think you are ready go for it , but you might not have enough dedication to finish it.

Probably best to forget the hedges and use terrain in another way, or choose another are ;)

good luck

I see, but those aren't hedges, but Farmlands, typical for Dutch farmland, I'll see how I can implent that in a good way.

And I don't expect this to be ready in 6-10 months, rather 1,5 years. But since there is no real good "Dutch" map, I feel dedicated to do this.

Well, here's the first terrain screenshot guys :)

It's the hills in the North, I hope I can show the ''polders'' soon enough when work is finished in levelling terrain :)

By the way, does anyone know an auto-render program?

For terrain? You can go fictional with l3dt, or find real dem info and use mirco dem and PS to use the real stuff provided you can find a quality dem.

The Netherlands has the most detailed GIS data available in the world I believe. AHN
Use the dataset called AHN2

If you use the GIS tutorial to import the terrain info, you should be able to get an exact terrain map from AHN2 at a detail level of 10points/1m^2. That is 20 times more accurate than the most accurate DEM data used in any current PR map.

Here is the link to the tutorial, https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f189-m ... heavy.html
Be aware the tutorial needs to be updated, you also need to figure out how to import the AHN2 data set for utrecht into MicroDEM.
One of the experienced mappers can probably give you better info, I have done this three times, but never mastered the process.

Also, you can find the exact age of every building on your map, and use that as a rough guide to get a better feel for which statics to place where:

Buildings in the Netherlands by year of construction

GIS: Geographic Information System

DEM : Digital Elevation Model

AHN: Algemeen Hoogtemodel Nederland (Dutch: Netherlands General Elevation Model)

Uni of Delft has a tool called Velas3D to take sections of AHN2 and import to programs like MicroDEM
AHN-2 ? Tags ? Brett Rijnders

EDIT: Might be easier to use the original AHN for BF2, more tools available to convert to DEM.

Huge difference in terrain elevation data between the free King's College data and the AHN2 data set.

Hey there, a small question are you still working on this project if so I would like to help out with anything, I got decent experience with level design on CryEngine 3? SDK and World Machine?. even though I do not live in the direct area I do live in The Netherlands, Zoetermeer. If you accept my offer please send me an email with any further questions you have about me.

Sorry guys, I have my graduation this year so I've been very very busy with my school and I didn't spend time in mapping. My exams will be in two weeks, after that I'll restart the mapping and try to use the systems as told earlier.

@Love4no1 Sure, contact me on skype, all help will be needed
