PR Mod Manager [Proof of Concept]

After being contacted by Onil to make a launcher for his project, I extended the idea to make a Project Reality Mod Manager, much like six update for Arma.

The idea is to allow any player to install/unistall any map, extension or mod made by you without them to manually download the files and placed in the correct folder.
The program would just show a list with mods/maps/etc, and the user would just need to press install.

Disadvantages:
  • The disadvantage for the developer would be the logistics to tell me to update the content, even thou it would be you(developer) to host the data
  • You would need to prepare your mod to be compatible, meaning all you work would need to start with a unique prefix or a xml map with all of you work.
  • The disadvantage for the user would be that I could not ensure the safety of the mod/map (that is on you)

Advantage
  • It would easier to install/unistall
  • Probably your work would reach more players (I think)
  • Updating would also be easier
Main Question - Is it worth it?
The main clients would be developers, without any mods prepared for this project there's no need for it.
And like I said to allow your work to be uninstalled it would require identification and the best way to do it is with a prefix or xml map, so it would require more work from you guys to prepare your mod for this.
So, are you up for it?

  • The red bars on the Corner is just to identify as concept
  • The red Bars in the List is an indicator -Installed, Disabled, Ready, Update ready
  • "Made by" is for the project leader, but in "Credits" it will show everyone names

*If a moderator could add a poll*
*Yes I would adapt my mod for this*
*No I would no adapt my mod for this*
*Maybe if... (explain)*

I think it is a great idea... I suggested the same to Hawker when he made the Control Panel but back then it was only to enable/disable different mods (no installing or updating option).

It is quite useful not just for big mod projects but also for maps and personal tweaks.

One thing that people need to be aware however is that if it is anything more than a custom map, it will give you errors/warnings on PR startup when checking the files, so you will not be able to join public servers with the mod enabled, only passworded servers. A custom map won't have that problem though.

Cheers ;)

Not the reaction I was expecting but I'm still slowly working on this.

The current version already allows the installation/uninstallation of levels (aka maps), a few UI changes were made, a working filter is ready, credits are available but still need tweaks.

The image was made by splatters. You should ask him.

Already did, he already gave permission.

Well, I'm closing this project.

Would like a confirmation from Ancient(or any other Dev) but it seems this concept will be added to the PR Launcher.

Time to move for my next PR project.

Nope, you can still work on this :) . Hit me up on Xfire and I'll let you know what's going on so you don't double up on what I'm doing :) .

Back to this project, and can anyone confirm that while no file is overwritten there's no problem with md5 checks?

Also would be ok to use an icon along these lines?

Or is this image reserved for official programs?
