Please read below and make sure you installed BF2 and PR in this order:

Here is the installation guide in tl;dr format:

Download and Install Battlefield 2.
Run BF2.
Note the version number on the bottom left corner of the log-in screen. Write it down.
log in or create a user account.
join online game.
adjust your audio and video settings now for convenience.
exit BF2.
Reboot.

(Optionally if you bought it) install Special Forces Addon.
Run BF2.
log in.
join online game.
exit BF2.
Reboot.

install 1.41 FULL PATCH.
This file is hosted by EA:
?Index of /pub/patches/BF2/1.41
Run BF2.
log in.
join online game.
exit BF2.
Reboot.

install 1.5 PATCH.

The Battlefield 2 v1.5 (536MB) file is an all encompassing update for all users. You can download patch 1.5 from any of the following locations:

Run BF2.
log in.
join online game.
exit BF2.

Download and install the prerequisite Visual C++ 2012 Update 1.
Which has been updated to Update 4.

Download and install PR 1.0 full installer. Downloads | Project Reality
Start the PR shortcut on desktop.
Mouse over the PLAY button, the submenu popup will have a "Check for Updates" option, select Check for Updates with a mouse click.

log in.
join online game.
exit PR.

Troubleshooting:

In BF2, If you crash at the splash screen, or the screen goes black and then crashes to desktop, try to start PR in windowed mode by following the directions below:

Edit your BF2 shortcut and put this in it

"D:\Program Files\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +restart +menu 1 +fullscreen 0 +szx 1280 +szy 720
Dont just copy paste this, but adjust to your install location. Make sure you don't omit quotation marks or it wont work. 

If you start in windowed mode and it CTDs, a Message will pop up telling you the problem. Take a screenshot or write this down and post it to this thread.

In PR, If you crash at the splash screen, or the screen goes black and then crashes to desktop, try to start PR in windowed mode by following the directions below:

1. Start PRLauncher->
2. Options->
3. Video Tab->
4. UNTICK the Fullscreen tickbox->
5. Chose a display resolution and refresh rate that is smaller than your desktop resolution from the drop down menu, or create a custom resolution->
6. Click Apply

If you start in windowed mode and it CTDs, a Message will pop up telling you the problem. Take a screenshot or write this down and post it to this thread.
