New to PR

I'm downloading PR while I'm typing this actually. I saw a ton of youtube videos on this mod and I really want to give it a go. Just wondering: what exactly do I need to know? I joined here awhile ago, meaning to get started...but the PC I had back then was a bit too weak for the mod.

This mod seems to be mostly a mil sim do I need to learn military lingo for everything?

Does the mod have voip or do I need to go to team speak?

How do the game mechanics work? Meaning mostly are the controls very different from the original BF2 controls?

Is there bullet drop? If so how much?

I apologize for all the questions, I am very new to mil sim, Day Z/War Z got me into the idea but this is basically my first experience with this type of game.

Welcome to the Community (First time saying that :D )!
First of all read the manual. It really helps a lot. If it comes to voip: it's built in and called PRMumble. It has positional local speech alongside with direct comms between SL (squad leaders) and CO (commander). You don't have to learn lingo for everything. At all actually. Everything will come naturally. If it comes to mechanics: they are a little bit trickier than in any other game but still intuitive, just when you join the squad tell the SL you're new and they'll guide you. Just do not use any heave assets, i.e., tanks, jets, apcs, ifv, choppers, at first, leave to more experienced players (for now). When you fell you are comfortable with infrantry mechanics you can move on to something bigger.

If you would like some more tips PM me and we could get together and put you through some basic training on training server.

Cheers
Bob

PS. Thread propably gonna be moved to BF :P R forum.

Thanks, I appreciate it.

Can I ask how voip works? Does it change at all when you're in a squad? Or are the guys in these videos usually on team speak?

PR mumble puts you in the same channel as everyone else in your squad automatically without you having to do anything. All you have to do is join a squad and start talking. :)

EDIT: also PR mumble is integrated into the game, so no need to download something separate.

Default key for squad chat is:
Numpad 0

Default key for local chat (3d positional) is:
H

I recommend changing them.

I have squad chat as C, and local chat bound to an extra button on my mouse.

And no, you don't have to learn mil-speak, but I will say that with 8 players in a squad, squad leaders will generally appreciate brevity in your statements... so rather than

"Hey guys, I see someone out in front of me, like it looks like an enemy, he's running away from us toward the big building"

Maybe say

"Enemy*, 240, in front of the building"

*Learn the uniforms & check your map before calling out enemies, so that you're not inducing teamkills :)

Ummm, this is the Arma3 PR channel - can you confirm which version you have downloaded as all the chat above refers to the BF2 version of the mod....

If it is the Arma 3 version you are talking about, well it's not released yet....

If you downloaded the Arma 2 PR it is dead, unfortunately it gained little momentum as it was released rather late in Arma 2s life span (even though there are plenty of great A2 servers).

Stay with infantry until you have the basics down and have enough confidence in your communication to work effectively with another player crewing an asset. I would say one of the most important skills for a new player to learn is how to ID and call out enemy positions. The helmets, body armor, weapons, and boots (boot colour was the first thing I used to ID players that were far away). Using a compass to call the direction of the enemy is a bit of an acquired skill, but with a little practice it will become very natural.

It's important to relay the information to the rest of your squad ASAP. Normally you would give a very quick description of what you are seeing, which direction from you it is, and if you have enough time to check your map and give an exact location.

"Enemy infantry, baring 230, moving west" would be an ideal summary for your squad. Keep in mind not everyone will be oriented the same way and as such you might see him at 230 degrees while your buddy up ahead will see it at 230. If your guys aren't seeing the enemy and you aren't being attacked take a moment to give as much detail as you can to your teammates.

"He is by the barn just a bit west of it moving through the treeline" might suffice, and if not you can always bring your map up (again this is assuming your opponent if oblivious) and give a more detailed position.
