Been discussed many a time. The given reason for iron sight zoom was that it simulates your increased concentration on the target, allowing you to see details that you would be unable to see otherwise. Now, with the BF2 engine, easiest way to do this is to add a small zoom.....

IMO the zoom isn't that much of an issue, its sorta like concentrating on an area rather than scanning the whole of your field of vision, its just that IRL your eyes work differently,-go into a car park and look for all the cars with a double letter on the reg plate , you won't be able to pick them all out without focusing on the individual cars -you could always see the double letters, its just your brain could only process so much information at once and missed most of them.

Well, to simply contribue to the conversation here... in real life when I'm focused on a target I actually pay more attention to the other things around it and it's almost as if my field of view expands. If I'm intent on hitting a target I'm going to aim at it.. but even more importantly I'm going to know what's happening around me before I pull the trigger. 9 times out of 10 in a live fire drill it will only take me 1 second to know what I'm shooting at and what I'm not.. the rest of the time is spent assessing the situation around me.. and not "staring the demon in the eye"
It would be nice to have a wider field of view when aiming.. because as it is right now there is very little room for situational awareness while targeting. Even more so, if I'm "zoomed into my irons" facing one way.. there's no way for me to see someone coming around the other corner that IRL would be in my perif vision... wider field of view would be the answer here. Especially when aiming.

No matter how hard you concentrate, the graphics on that little pixelated person aren't going to get any better.....
That's where the slight zoom comes in.

I think the zoom is lame and have always said so.
I think it should be removed. No matter how you slice it, YOUR EYES DO NOT HAVE MAGICAL MAGNIFICATION.
If you have crappy vision, concentrating harder won't make anything more clear, but glasses will..... hmmm
I think a better answer would be "tough, it's staying cuz we said so" by the devs instead of some lame excuse about concentration makes you see farther.

How about, like the air vehicles, when pressing a certain button the player moves his field of view so that his rifle stays put the view moves. Im not sure if you can give FP pov the attributes of a jet but if you can make the player in 3rd person view, like other mods, you can do this. NOTE 3RD PERSON VIEW IS BAD, NOT ASKING FOR IT. this would enlarge your view so that little supprises would come up on you.
Another way to go is scaling down the sight. when i use a weapon, playing airsoft so note reliable source, the ironsight is not the only thing i see, i can see alot to my left and alot to my right. as for reflex and red dot sights- basicly the same, its no zoom and you dont put your face into it so the outide rim should not be on the edge of your screen. even zooming scopes should have a little outside view except for some sniper rifles. Just some suggestions that i would at least look into to see if possable.

the "zoom" in PR v0.4 was changed to about 1.2x for iron sights and about 1.4x for optical sights. it's about the best we can do to simulate "focus" and narrowing of the field of view when you focus on targetting the weapon.
it's a really minor "zoom". we might tweak it down a lil further, but it won't be removed.

Have you tested it with no zoom at all?

I think what egg would say to that is somethign like this:
We haven't had the coding time to implement a sort of blur effect or black out gradient or something like that with every single weapon because the zoom works well enough for now and we've been constantly focusing on introducing new gameplay elements that will have a much more profound effect on gameplay.
Just a guess.
id say we could have this issue sorted out by .5 though, so dont worry too much.

The zooming is a way to compensate for the focusing you do in real life..
Thats how I see it..

If anything, the "nonzoomed" view has negative zoom, so to speak, in order to compensate for a lack of peripheral vision, and the ironsights view is normal in relation to real life.

whenever you get around to fixing up the sights more, please make it so you dont jerk the gun into your face the instant you click the button, maybe have it so the longer you hold the aim button the gun comes closer and as you continue to hold the button maybe a zoom... maybe.
make it similar to the double tap run thing, single right click is a slower aim, and a double/holded a fast zoom (still slowed abit)

You can't add new controls.
Ok, I can say for a fact that I do have a "magnification" when I concentrate on things. It might just be because I wear glasses, but on a "plink sheet", if I concentrate, I can see some rows of text I wasn't previously able to see by relaxing.
Zooming could also simulate the person bringing his head forward, as a person naturally does when he focuses on things.

Another thing: the american spec-ops, and the GB one can see the whole screen while zooming in with the scope, while the GB assault can only see the scope with the same zoom.

When I used to go to the range (former army) I would NEVER close my non fireing eye until I was the target i wanted to shoot at. You dont sit in your sights regardless its pointless NOW thats real life.. In game if you didnt have the little zoom the entire game would become close quarter combat because EVERYONE would basically have the same view scale depending on your video card. Well not everyone has the same eyesight in this world so i guess they are just trying to compensate. The only thing i could say maybe change is.. When you close your non fireing eye for a long time your other eye will go out of focus and you will have to open your non fireing eye to get regain that focus. So maybe you can make it so that some sort of fuzzyness comes into play if they stay into the sights for to long. and it will force them to come out of the sight for their player to regain focus..
