Explorer.exe broken after PR install & PB update

Hello everyone,
It's been some years since I played this game, so I thought I'd give it a try again and see how it turned out!
I installed as the sticky install guides told me to.
While installing PR & PB update, the system rebooted before it was finished.
"System recovered from serious error" it said.
Played PR on one empty mp-server.
Couldn't get other servers to load, gave up and went to bed.
Next day my desktop icons and taskbar didn't load.
System couldn't completely shut itself down either.
I checked some explorer.exe registry thingies with help from google, but everything seemed fine there.
Got desktop back once by running explorer.exe from Task Manager.
But most of the times explorer seems broken.
So I hate to admit it, but I think I have a problem.
I used System Restore to return to 1.1 BF install. Computer works fine again!!!
I checked my HDD and there were some damages which then got repaired.
But
I once tried installing 1.41, 1.5 and then the PR.iso again, but...same problem:
Desktop broken, no windows on this windows. Explorer.exe not running.
Is it PR?
Is it PB update (included in pr.iso)?
Is it my BF and that scary DVD protection service?
Is it my x86 XP SP3?
Is it my 2500K w/ 8gb and a HD6850 on a P8H67M pro?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
From Sweden with Love,
Johnny.

Did you play BF2 1.5 online multiplayer before trying to install the PR.iso ?
Which method to mount/unzip the PR .iso file did you use?

Hi Litoralis,
No, I only loaded BF2 after installing 1.5, but not a game. I logged in and saw the menu.
(EDIT: Will try and report! To be continued)
I mounted the .iso using a virtual disc program called Virtual Clonedrive, by Slysoft. Then autorun.
Regards,
Johnny

Uninstalled BF2.
Removed folder Battlefield from Program Files.
Rebooted.
Installed BF2, English.
Logged in, played 10 sec on mp server.
Rebooted.
Installed 1.41.
Logged in, played.
Rebooted.
Installed 1.5.
Logged in, changed res, played.
Rebooted.
Made System Restore point.
Mounted PR.iso and followed autorun.
Installed with PB updates checked.
Started PR.
In the pop-up looked at mumble options. Mumble crashes.
Played PR succesfully on mp-server.
Rebooted.
System starts slow.
Played PR 15 minutes. Disconnect due to connection problem (unlikely).
Didn't like using numlock 0. Started mumble to change keys.
Interface looks like things are missing. Mumble crashes and crashes.
Reboot.
System passes windows logo, but hangs with black screen.
Hard reset.
System doesn't load explorer.exe / not responding.
Hard reset.
Load into Safe Mode and reset.
Same problem. No desktop icons, no Taskbar. No explorer.exe running.
Starting explorer.exe from Task Manager. To no avail.
System cannot fully complete shutdown, so hard reset.
Load into Safe Mode, and return to System Restore point before PR installation.
System reboots automatically.
Seems fine again. Will try playing some BF2 and see how pc behaves.

Hi,
PC has been running fine with just BF 2 1.5.
But when I install PR and PB update, by mounting pr.iso
the game runs once or twice
and then breaks my windows.
No taskbar, desktop icons, no explorer.exe running.
Cannot get explorer.exe to load trough Run.
When shutting down the system warns that explorer.exe is not responding. OK
It then continues to shut down but hangs with the shutting down screen.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Register? .Net?
Cheers Johnny

Can you post your system specs?
As for .Net framework, download the newest 4.0.X for Windows XP.
I don't think it's a registry problem, PR does not touch any core system registry entries at all.
WinXP x86 or x64?
Have you physically unmounted virtualclonedrive virtual drive?
This is such a strange problem I'm not sure what else to say, you're going down the same path of troubleshooting as I would suggest.

IF you're using the 32bit version of windows, have you applied this boot parameter?
Try it:

We're looking at a
ASUS P8H67M-pro motherboard with an
i5 2500K and
2 x 4gb XMS3 modules and a
Ati Radeon HD 6850 1gb,
powered by a Cooler Master GX 450 PSU.
It has 2 harddrives,
a v300 SSD with Ubuntu 12.04 x64 and
a 5400 RPM WD green 1tb disc, several partitions, the first one containing x86 XP SP3.
I have bought the mobo-proc-mem set on Ebay, 2ndhands, and have had a difficult time getting it stable.
Tried several OS installs, ran in to BSODs and driver errors, formatted again.
But the set-up of today has been running fine, until I set my mind on PR!
I have tested my memory for some 24+ hours using memtest, no errors.
PSU 'died' two times, didn't work with paperclip-test. System worked with 300W PSU so I send the GX 450 back - but they find nothing wrong (even on high load).
HDDs checked, hardly errors, at least fixable.
So when you write that this is such a strange error. That! does! it!
I suspect the motherboard is mental!!! Maybe memory, or processor.
Anyway I will install .net 4.0 (not sure, I only have "client profile" in Add & Remove)
Then install PR
and this time unmount (didn't),
reboot,
3 hail mary's,
apply the boot parameter,
might check bios settings (mem speed, optimal settings or the like) and
report here.
Thanks for your help.
Johnny

You need to test that 450W PSU on another PC.
You need to pull all the RAM except one module, test one at a time, test each slot one at a time. It's a PITA, depending on how much your time is worth, might be cheaper to upgrade than deal with that Reductio ad absurdum required testing,.
What you're describing is most probably a bad motherboard. swapping the mobo out, then the CPU, then the mobo CPU, then the mobo and RAM, then the CPU and RAM, ... etc.
Time is money, don't stress over this, in the end you'll need new components. If the RAM is not fubared, than you're ahead of the game in the end.
