Footsteps too silent v2

Hello,

I'd like to make a new thread about an issue I've been having since the last 2 patches with footsteps being too silent (again). This is the continuation of this thread which was closed.

Other feedback:
Jaeger.Pyro wrote:- Before 1.0, i could hear footsteps within 20-50 meter radius.
- In 1.0, i could hear footsteps within 20-30 meter radius.
- In the last 2 patches, i can only hear footsteps withing 5-10 meter radius.

I had the same problem, although I can't speak for the latest release. (.6)

My guess was that it was just due to general increase of sound density than to actual changes in the system: 100 players, more effects, more vehicles and more soundbugs, more people talking in the squad, etc.
-> Was there even a change regarding footsteps/audio?

Back in 0.98 when I had a shitty computer, the sound was the only thing that made it possible to me to be on par with people having huge screens and all-high settings.
Post 1.0 I had problems localizing vehicles (too much distraction / too silent) and infantry (could not hear them).

But when a firefight is happening next to you: you should not hear footsteps in that situation unless you are listening very carefully.

Biggest difference is indeed on Ultra High settings. Maybe devs did it on purpose so people on Ultra High could not "abuse" it and spot enemies 30m away and FOBS like 200m by its sound? I mean the whole Ultra High mode was never really intended by the devs. I remember Anders saying he did not optimize his sounds for that mode but rather only for "High" and lower. So infact the Ultra High mode was always a thing very few people could use and have a big advantage of it.

I used it for quite a while but stopped due not being able to record videos in that mode. And since 1.0 kind of neutralized its advantages anyways it was not worth going for it again.

Pretty sure its much more the case of other sounds being increased, as I dont remember seeing changes to footsteps volumes recently, although im sure Anders will comment.

There are several changes that haven't been mentioned in changelogs.

Nope, the footsteps got quieter. I don't know if it was a direct or indirect change but they sure are quieter.

Yes footsteps are very quiet now, everyone is a ninja :O . We should be able to hear a sprinting guy in at least a 30 m radius.

Also realized that. Sometimes when youre hiding behind a tree or something some guy pops up right in yo face. Its like hes literally on top of you and you dont hear him. Its worst on Dovre winter, APC or heli can be 20m next to you but sometimes you cant hear it. Not all the time tho. I could hear a bmp around 100m away this evening while i could NOT hear another bmp just next to me (both were kind of close to me and i was trying to hunt down the further one with LAT since i didnt hear the close one. Got shot then by close bmp that was on stealth mode. Engine was running/it was driving. Later when i was wounded bmp sound appeared very loud). May be its bugged? That was sooo weird. Suddenly BMP next to me.

Edit: Is it possible that you sometimes dont hear anything at all once something (like assets or a walking soldier) is behind a building/tree/wall or a little hill?

It seems as if it had something to do with that. As if something just blocked the sounds.

Has anything changed since the last two patches, because the footsteps seem way more silent now.

The sound files themselves and 'code' behind them hasn't changed since last year as far as I can see. But Anders maybe knows more :)

I also feel as though footsteps are too quiet, although more often the problem is that distant fire-fight and vehicle sounds drown them out, which as far as realism and immersion are concerned, isnt a problem at all.

There have certainly been too many instances recently in which I am expecting an enemy to come a certain way (with little or no background noise), and I plan to gauge his approach via audio, when suddenly he appears ahead of schedule like a thief in the night.

On the subject of Dovre Winter, I do think the walking snow crunches should be louder than their equivalent sounds on dirt or pavement inside of 30 meters. But the vehicle sounds would likely be quieter at range, as I have read that snow-laden trees work to muffle most distant sounds.

That doesn't make much of a difference. Sounds goes from 0 up to 1. The difference between 0.11 and 0.15 isn't that much. And that's dirt only.

Somethings gotta be "wrong" if a lot of people are reporting footsteps being too quiet, its hard for us normal people to say whats wrong. :P

Why would anyone care about footsteps in a game like PR is beyond me. Oh wait people are mad their 100$ sound system is useless and know they can't sit in a corner waiting for that magic notification trolol

Just because you prefer to remain on the low side of situational awareness in CQB doesn't mean everyone plays like you. Footsteps have been a life saver for many players I'm sure, if you don't notice a difference why bother posting?
