This article says that EA intend to host their own servers for some old BF games including BF2.
I know the devs said they would be able to work around it but I'm glad the pressure is off them now.
Edit:
Update on EA Titles Hosted on GameSpy - EA News
For a moment I actually thought EA were doing something good, silly me!
Thankfully it looks like the PR Devs have got everything under control. Thanks for your foresight guys!

So how exactly do they intend to do this, release a patch after they have the servers up and running? Cuz I have a feeling this won't actually happen. I hope I'm wrong though. I hope the pr devs are working on a backup solution just incase.

They'll probably update via Origin.

What about the Steam/CD versions of BF2? I presume they'll make you add your key to origin?

Well, Steam/Origin. Didn't meant to leave Steam out. I can see EA asking CD owners to register their versions with Origin. I kinda doubt that they'll release a 1.6 downloadable patch as a standalone installer for non-Origin users to use.

You can add your retail version of BF2 to origin right now. Contact EA live chat, give them your CD keys, and they'll add it to your account. I had BF2 deluxe edition, and it showed up as BF2:SF in origin. When you download it, it downloads the lastest patch so, you have EF & AF. Origin only acts as a downloader, so you don't need it running.
I kinda hope DICE releases a 1.6 patch. Maybe they'll add some features to help mod DEV teams out. Such increasing/removing BF2's effect particle limit and make it possible for fast ropes

I doubt the clients need to do anything. You're connecting to some gamespy URL or something and I can imagine they'll just redirect that URL to something from EA and everybody can play - done.

Same what I thought. And why would they NOT release a patch to download if needed, Darman?

Because they want people on Origin.

1.6 Patch plox.
I'd love all scrapped features from BF2 alpha restored so the left over code could be used, ability for vehicles to stay stationary when moved in a ship scrapped in BF2, explodable mines, hitbox and stability fix, commander fix, bug fixes and more freedom in the engine. Pretty optimistic about it.

It's pretty awesome. Only stumbled about it on a mod.
When DICE were developing Battlefield 2, they had a lot of features like fastropes, underwater diving, dropable helmets (Alpha mods), getting tags etc but those were never finished or scraped (but left over) due to meeting EA's release.
It's called Alpha because, in versions you have Alpha which is like a concept version of the game, Beta which is the near-finish concrete game and then you got the final version which is the polished one.
They scrapped vehicles, fastropes, underwater etc due to time constraints/EA.

Though things like lazing, dynamic physics (movable objects), etc is still there in the final version.

Could you link to 3/4 also? You linked 4/4 twice by mistake.

No 3/4 unfortunately. Thanks though, fixed.
Doubt they will reimplement scrapped features. Usually gaming companies reuse their materials in later games.
At-least bug fixes, and community modding improvements and feedback would be great

I wish someone would address what I said about having a backup plan incase this isn't ready by the time the gamespy servers go down.

I was pleasantly surprised to hear that EA will save the older games from doom. Shame they haven't announced a fix for 1942 and Vietnam though.

Also, in pre 1.2 you could destroy projectiles by other damaging projectiles. They took this feature out of the code after 1.2...
Destroying IEDs by putting C4 on them would be awesome for example

You mean BF2 v. 1.2 ?
At least BC2 (+Vietnam) will be saved by EA !
