I couldnt really find a appropriate section for this and since its kind of related to PR I thought I would post it.
Do you think EA will release the BF2 source code?

Not for a long time, they need to make several sequels that are actually mods. It wont be released until there is no more money to be made.

If you ask me... The chance of Battlefield 2142 having a sequel on the PC is slim and none. They screwed it up and now they are tryin to make another one on the consoles. So hopefully they will open it soon, allowing modders to use the BF2 engine to its full potential.

I wasn't stating fact, maybe I sounded a bit too confident. Just a guess.

I'd love to hear a wish list from the coders of what would be possible if BF2 were open source'ified
we can always dream...

I'm fairly confident that they will never release the source. They haven't for BF1942, and that engine is of no use to them anymore.

Have any major games ever released the source code? Doubtful. It provides no benefit to the company unless someone were to buy the code for however many hundreds of thousands and donate it to the community.

As a developer in a former life (do medical stuff now) the problem comes from the use of libraries of code to speed up the development of your software. While EA could release the BF2 code there would be sections they could not include as it refers to code that EA does not own. Even having the code that interfaces with the library might not be allowed depending on how restrictive the license is for the library.
So EA would have to pay people to go through the code with a fine tooth comb to pull all that stuff out. Then what they would release would have only a limited benefit. The cost to do all this just does not make any sense for them.
For Quake and such ID software is a rare company that built itself from the ground up, including ALL the code for every part of the game. These days things might be different for them but back in the day it was all them.
OTOH, I am not sure why OSS has not come up with games like BF2. Code is one thing but all the art work that goes in to the games in the models and textures and such is crazy. Artists are just starting to get plugged in to the "OOS" side of things via Creative Commons and such. Making a living seems like it is rough to begin with for artist compared to code monkeys.

Shhhhhhhhhh we don't want EA to find out and try to ruin it...
The fact that this MOD is free is
totally fucking awesome...
They would charge money for this...

dont copy rights have an expiary date on them anyway? i know that most films only hold a copy right for 20 ish years... maybe its the same for games?
but by then we will most likely be on bf6142, prmm3.0 and fh2

Hackers have probably largely dissassembled the executable machine code already anyway... it wouldn't pay a company to be too naive about the degree to which others will dissassemble their works and misappropriate from them.
