Lack of SLs

I don?t know if it?s only happening to me, but lately most of the servers I join there?s a a complete lack of Squad Leaders. Only 1 or 2 per team create infantry squads, and if the SL goes AFK or leaves, the hole squad will disband because no one else is in condition of leading It. If there is someone willing to teach a couple of guys how to run a squad I?d be glad to participate, and I?m sure many others will do.

It's been a problem for quite a while now, old SLs "retired" and no one has been willing to replace them, in my opinion because there are so many "new" players who don't follow orders and just do as they wish. And very few people are willing to spend a whole round trying to gather his men and yell at them until they actually act as intelligent human beings.
My very few attempts at leading went completely to hell as it's really hard to be heard and followed by people. So now I sometimes happen to create a squad if no one does, just to fill in the gaps but I don't lead, I just gave up.
It's also really hard to manage 8 people plus communicating with other squads/commander and building stuff and making decisions... not many people are willing to go through all that.
Ask for Wicca to teach you or to create an "academy" on PRTA, the guy's always SL and he LOOOOVES talking, he'll swarm you with his good words and teach you everything you want!

Make a squad called teamwork, and if you initiate some kind of teamwork mission to help the team, it will mostly run itself. If you are new to leading, just ask other squad leaders how you could assist them with your squad, and you will have a good round.

Nothing more fun then squadleading random pubbies who are actually willing to cooperate with you, Spearhead (unit in PRTA), was actually created with that in mind, squadleading everyone who is willing to play and make them follow you. As long as you talk much and keep em bussy with your talking they will 9/10 follow you. If they do not, you report them/kick them out of the squad.
There are enough people willing to follow squadleaders but you just need to interact a lot with them in the squad, make sure they are there and responding all the time, then eventually they get the hang of it, and you see how much they appreciate someone willing/trying to get the squad together and making coordinated attacks/moves.

Yeah I myself also don't particularly like leading, don't get me wrong it has it's very rewarding moments when you get a tight squad who knows how to stick together and fallow Squadleader's directions and orders. I also commend people who enjoy squad leading and make good effort to keep their squad active and together game after game.
I Myself find it tiring to lead squad after squad after squad when i do pick up the kit, my best advice to keep the Squadleaders who do enjoy squadleading to keep from burning out from the position would be to learn the game mechanics and step up to the role once in a while. as well as fallow your squadleadrs orders to the best of your ability.

As a person who likes to sqd lead a lot, I have to say one of the big things that turns me off anymore are people going on solo journey's without my permission. Sometimes I like send out 2 man patrols when defending and such, but when people decide to go and do whatever it really messes with your plans for engagement or for defenses.
Come summer time I'm sure people will be back, at least those who have been busy with school and such like me. With any luck we'll see an increase within the next month or two!

I notice social inhibition in general. Players used to get all excited about new ways to communicate wrestling VOIP programs and making sure they join the right channel on the right side so they can talk to their squad. Some even went through the trouble to learn english :O .
But nowdays most squads are mute despite my attempts at humour, no matter how many gender or racial stereotypes I throw in.

If I do a squad with unknown pubbers I choose to defend the last flag as this can be easier to organise. I have been pleasantly surprised with the CO operation of many US players recently, last time we were the only inf squad at bunkers on Kashan and through being careful and slow we kept the flag.
I was annoyed by our two big squads up on the hills, but as we ended up winning by 300 tickets I am forced to think that they kept the pressure off us and killed alot of enemy armour from up there.
Verdict if you're not confident in yourself of your squad go defend.

I love leading and I create a TEAMWORK INF squad at the start of a new round. One thing that pisses me off is the huge amount of VOIP being used. Sometimes I hear SLs talking in SL Chat aswell as Squadmembers talking in squad chat + Local chat. It's very confusing sometimes and 8 people is hard to manage.
I just kick people that don't listen, don't spawn at the place where I said, grabs his own kit and so on. I agree that there was a certain drop of teamwork in the last+ months, but I try my best to fight it and I'm welcoming to new players and I have no problem teaching them the mechanics of PR.
I think it's also important to talk a lot and hold the superiority on the squad chat if you want people to listen to you. Don't be afraid to do comms check to shut up everyone to give orders and so on. Otherwise it's chaos. Stay light hearted too, take the game seriously but have a laugh when you die instead of complaining, it pisses off your squadies.

Ploddit, we need u back in europe.
To answer the OP.
PR is a game made for squadleaders. Without them the game simply is not enjoying. I am currently working on that, so if you want to join along the ride, feel free to visit my teamspeak or site.
All I can say to new squadleaders is; If you don't know how to attack, defend. And make sure you remember those sweet spots on the different maps. Where to go etc.
If you are abit more intermediate, experiment with how to give commands, how to talk to people and how to use local to your advantage. Social experiments will really bost your self esteem. Even if they fail.
And when you feel you have good control of your squad, pairs of 2 are the best way to clear out shit. Since they dont fill the comms, and 2 is always better than 1.
Hopefully we can start leading SLs back into PR.

I love leading squads....
Since I can actually dictate people
But it's easy being squad leader on Trans, and assets. But it's a pain on INF squads alot. Since there are a good amount of players that don't have ears apperently.
If you need some tips... here you go.
1.Do not let anyone boss you around.
2.Take suggestions from squad mates. (Honestly, this is definently the best tip. I have counted at least 100 times where I did plans that my squad mates say that will be good, or at least we shall try it out. IT works.)
3.Make sure you kick those who are just idiots or don't listen.
4.Respect New players (most will learn quickly. Be nice to them though)
5.Listen to commander (well.... try to)
But really, squad leading is a ***** sometimes. If you have like every other squad leader not communicating it's frustrating. And then sometimes you might get cocky for the rest of that match/ time.
But, I don't know what server(s) you play on often. But I know I get good squad leaders on american servers.

I dont think there are too few squad leaders and I always find enough squads to play with / lead.
Sometimes the SLs lack quality but that's just because of lack of experience I think.
Very rarely I see "kit squads" or have SMs running around on their own (they get kicked).
Not communicating SMs are not that rare but I dont see any problem with that as long as they stick around and point their rifle where I want them to point it.
My tip is to step up as SL and if you are new just tell your SMs you are new at Squadleading.
Make clear decisions and give no, or very few decisions to your SMs.
Set out a goal for your squad (less experience means you should choose easier goal)
Explain SHORTLY how you want to achieve it
Do it.
If you fail, rethink your plan. If it was complete noob failure, you'll know most of the time. Like attacking a flag that is defended by a tank without AT/HAT/SUPPORT.
Try again. Fail again, ask SMs for ideas how to achieve goal.
Repeat.
No special missions for that ONE guy who wants to "scout". He will die and can not be revived (and will whine about it)
Main objective of a new SL should be to KEEP EVERYONE TOGETHER.
Everything else will come with time.

Plenty of "old school" SLs around, and there are plenty of veteran players stepping up to the plate. Unfortunately there seems to be a disconnect between the newest batch of players and the older ones, I don't want to get into it as there have been countless threads for the topic.

I find SLing to be a lot like that game snake.
Now give me a second.
If you have never really done the job as an infantry Squad leader this is aimed at you.
You the prolific Squad Member. You have done all this before. You've spotted enemy and remained hidden till the right time. You've been split up and had to travel long distances alone.
In order to make the next step and be the Leader this community need you need to remember your time alone.
The skills you fostered, as part of a larger team or solo, translate directly to the "new leader" position. Remember that time you crossed a street on Ramiel solo, deep behind enemy lines? What you need to do now as the leader is for the most part the same.
That brings me back to that game snake. In that game you are a snake with the sole goal of eating dots. For every dot you eat the snake gets a little bit larger. As you advance your tail grows and grows behind you. Think of your new squad and it's seven men as that tail stretching out behind you on the map.
Those skills that got "you" across the street? They apply just as well now that you are the leader. Look both ways, listen to your surroundings and approach with caution. The big difference this time is your snake's tail. As your snake eats dots, or you gain squad members. Your goal is the same, look and listen, but you do so knowing that you will take longer to clear ground now than you did solo as a grunt.
Ah, but this is precisely where those other seven people come on hand. The same street where earlier you would have been solo, now you can post up overwatch to cover your movement.
That doorway that needs rushed through. Why do it yourself? That's what the other seven guys are for. Take your time to set them up. Use them to be the hammer your new unit needs.
The main point here is that anyone with seat time as a rifleman has the ability to move up to the next level. Do not succumb to the intimidation, you yourself have the skills, tactics and ability to get the job done. In practice it all becomes second nature.
Just give it time.

I think a solution is to create two squads under one squad leader. Therefore more players have access to a quality squad leader. It would require the squad leader to have a friend he can count on to control the second squad.
Basically you ignore the squad limit and squad radio limitation. You keep everyone together and do a majority of talking locally.
I'm going to have to test this out with my unit.
I know a lot of squad leaders complain of players not following orders, but as a squad leader you are responsible for how your squad acts.
I always ensure my squad mates fight cohesively one way or another.
