Technical (?) issues with MUMBLE (mainly)

by Marschall
Good day! I will keep this as short as possible. This thread should've probably landed somewhere in a rather computer-related discussion forum rather than in gaming because it might cover severe difficulties (in over all computer settings).

I have spend 2 days now trying to fix these problems and would even be glad to pay someone who could help me fix this whole mess.

Problems:
1. MUMBLE
This just does not work. It crashes down immediately after I either open BF2 :P R and join a multiplayer server or open MUMBLE itself from the PR launcher (Options-> Mumble-> Launch).

The errors contain almost nothing as you can see below (basic XP error reporting ****). I took this with my phone because my laptop just froze at that point.

What I tried to do:
- Downloaded latest beta version of MUMBLE (not integrated in BF2 :P R) and tried installing it.
- As I entered setup menu of PR mumble I could not hear any voice output from the initial testing faze (where it says 'you should hear a voice, adjust the bar below blahblah').
- After installing it (even though I could hear nothing) here is what it said after i opened mumble (separately, not from the launcher):
[18:51:03] Opening URL mumble://mumble.realitymod.com:64739/?version=1.2.0
[18:51:03] Opening chosen DirectSound Output failed. No audio will be heard.
[18:51:05] Connecting to server mumble.realitymod.com.
[18:51:35] Server connection failed: Connection timed out.
- I have no microphone, but I believe a microphone would work in any other application (such as skype) so my sound system is not messed up (i think)

2. Game crashes to desktop
Sometimes out of the blue the game would crash to the desktop with no error whatsoever. I know this a common issue, and it might just have a lot to do with the video settings. When they're on 'LOW' crashes are less frequent. Let's say I can live with those.

Please people help me with the mumble thingy, I have searched everywhere could not find a thing that would apply to me.

Well first off, the latest version of Mumble is the integrated one. Those beta versions are old and will not work at all.

To me it appears you have problems with your version of XP in general. A lot of your programs seem to crash in that short report you put there.

Does XP have 'Event Viewer'? If so, I would check in there to find the exact error codes, it might just be one .dll file causing your problems which you can usually ask someone for and they'll provide it so you don't need to re-download the entire game.

@Steeps: Thank you very much for replying!

I checked out Event Viewer and as there are one or two errors from other programs as well (which don't have anything to do with mumble as far I'm concerned) most of these errors are from mumble, all of which with this description: "Faulting application prmumble.exe, version 1.0.0.0, faulting module prmumble.exe, version 1.0.0.0, fault address 0x000c37b4."

How can I know if a .dll file is causing problems or if the issue has to do with something else? You suppose a fresh install would help?

EDIT: After going through some more of Event Viewer I stumbled upon another error:
"Faulting application bf2voicesetup.exe, version 0.0.0.0, faulting module bf2voicesetup.exe, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x00008661.". Maybe has something to do with mumble?

I experienced BF2 Voice Setup crashing on a lot of systems, it has nothing to do with PRMumble and I wouldn't worry about it.

A fresh install might be a good idea and considering XP has reached it's End Of Life I strongly recommend you that chance and upgrade to Windows 7.

I'm not sure why your page file is displayed as "Page File: -85307392,00 B", this doesn't sound correct.
Take a look at this page how to change it to a proper value.
For best performance, do not set the initial size to less than the minimum recommended size under Total paging file size for all drives. The recommended size is equivalent to 1.5 times the amount of RAM on your system. Usually, you should leave the paging file at its recommended size, although you might increase its size if you routinely use programs that require a lot of memory.

@BloodyDeed: We met a few days ago on irc if you remember I was the desperate guy with mumble -still- not working.

Well I cannot upgrade to Win7 I tried to long time ago, it won't work on my laptop. However I could switch to vista in a desperate point (which i might not do because I have a shitton of very important files here which i can't lose). However, would vista be a good idea?

Yeah I remember you.

Have you tried temporarily disabling your anti virus and windows firewall?

Mumble crashes when I open it from the launcher regardless of the fact that I am connected to the internet or not. Yes I have tried those nevertheless.

BTW: beta mumble does connect to servers (the one that is not integeated) but I can't hear jack.

Does vista have any issues with BF2 :P R?

I have a very important question: Is it possible for Safe Mode (XP) to interfere somehow with the installation causing it to be in one way or another corrupted? I do all my installing in safe mode just.. to be safe essentially.

That is a mozilla Firefox program.
Do you have AVG Toolbar for Firefox installed?
Try disabling AVG, and AVG toolbar.
Shutdown Firefox before starting PR.
Go to taskmanager and make sure plugin-container.exe and firefox.exe is completely shutdown,.
Then start PR

You also need to shutdown Spybot's full suite of programs.
I forgot the name of the plugin, is it called Teatimer? That is also causing a problem.
You have a program controlling your IP and DHCP (and probably HOSTS file) which is screwing up the PRmumble.exe's attempt to connect.

You got quite a few things going on here.
