Soviet Army (1980s)

So we are missing a (good) historically-correct 1980s Soviet-Afghanistan game on market.
I have been looking into throwing together a minimod with 1980s Soviet Army for testing and I think you still need new maps(even if just clones of old ones) because there can be only one set of voice files.
Taliban voice will be fine; but you will have Soviets shouting in German/English...etc.
Having a tan texture is good enough for the uniform as a placeholder, and weapons are mostly there except AK-74 needs (wood) texture rework.
Equipment for Soviet Army is also pretty much there; swap to one of the "chechen" gear with 6b3 and type 2 bayonet or just change texture of RD-54/ssh68 on current kit geometry would both look mostly acceptable as placeholder.
So, the only problem is to get mapper to allow a cloned map just for minimod, someone make a tan uniform texture(the guy who made digi flora agreed to do it if the mod is getting playable), and all that's left is to just assemble a SA faction.
Also, think up of a name for the minimod.
TL;DR - it's happening unless there are violent objections.
It can also be used in hypothetical Cold War-went-hot scenario map if that ever become a thing.

Not yet; I'm going to get stuff built on something like Lashkar for personal use and make sure it's working before I get to asking for permissions.

Archer could offer some great gameplay.

Archer would be amazing with the Soviets, I dreamed about it once. Then again, you would have to give up the Canadians on the map for it to work, and have permission from ze mapper.

The Canadians wouldn't be a problem, since it would need to be in a different folder to change some Static Objects from the map (e.g. removing the NATO mainbase and the VCP as well as remaking the abandoned airfield to make it look like new)

Saaremaa could work great with a Cold War USMC vs Cold War USSR layer. Sounds like OpF to me
Also the Northern Alliance was a rather well equipped group for their time period. I'd say they could function well in an AAS environment with a reasonable ticket advantage above the soviets.
Insurgency wouldn't be very good in wide open spaces for the USSR because they don't have the same range advantage as their modern counterpart

But they would have a lot of autocannons.

I don't know what your sig's link means; are you making a minimod?

Kind of, it's only a design plan but there's two very talented texture workers that I entered in contact some time ago and have showed some willingness to get the project going, and there's also permission to use the Operation Archer map.
It have things such as kit set-ups and vehicle tasks on things that you'll probably need if you wish to recreate truly the scenario (huge tech superiority of the Soviets, while the Mujahideen will have to rely on guerrilla tactics, taking in mind that in inf vs inf combat they'll be pretty much equal due to the lack of scopes).
I have no ways of keeping the project now, and as you also want to make that scenario, I can get you the permission to edit the Design Plan as you will.

I can't wait to play in soviet-era afghanistan. Russians vs Taliban doesn't seem really overpowered, since it's about the same weapons but with T80's, BMP-2's, MI-24 etc which will be really awesome, and makes insurgency more fairer for the noobs (including me) XD

I'm planning for stuff like that.
But right now I just want to at least get USSR vs. Taliban working.

Is it possible to make a horse in BF2?

Not really. Legs don't really work well within BF2. People tried, results are poor.
Horses work great in BF2142 though. I've seen some nice things on youtube about that, moving really really realistic. But I can't find the vids anymore...

USMC didnt use M2 Bradleys and BDU patterns would need to be made. The AK74 would have been entering widespread service by then, etc.
