If you can get a key, legally, you can just download the ISO. Thats what I do. I lost my original copy but have the CD-key saved on file. Data is data, as long as you have a legally acquired key then it doesn't matter the medium.
It looks like 20 bucks is the go-to price for the game. Origin has it listed as that too, but remember, you're getting BF2 and all its expansions\boosterpacks. Plus you can play PR and other mods. Definitely worth the price IMO.

Depends how much of a hurry you're in... a year ago it was $8.00 or less maybe, on Steam. Maybe they'll have it on sale for XMas. Check Steam.

It's not available on Steam anymore. It's page is still up, but there's no Buy option.

It's not available anymore, but it use to be on EA's ORIGIN downloader. I've got the Battlefield 2 Complete Collection for around $20.

Yeah it isn't for sale on steam or origin anymore due to the gamespy servers going down I guess. I need to grab a new copy too as my old copy is back home on disc and I've been itching to play PR. Do we need unique CD keys to install and play using PR's master servers?

Dude, i'm not saying pirating is good, but I did it anyway.
Sorry. I realize the circumstances make it hard not to go there. But for now the forum rules still include that rule - Spec

There are indeed still CDkey checks, and if you use a CD key that has been banned for hacking/griefing, you will not be able to join any servers. It doesn't have to be a CD key you paid for (since we don't have the official EA master list), but it should be unique and preferably legitimate.

Honestly I think EA is actively trying to destroy any game of theirs that has mod support. The communities that come from mod support of older games threaten sales of their newer titles. So while I hate to say it... I believe there is absolutely no legitimate way to purchase this game anymore, and any CD versions of the game will most certainly be second hand.

Good Evening,
As bluedrake said, you will have to get it second hand. I looked on craigslist and found a ton of them out there. The only issue is that they were bundled with other PC games and sold as a lot from $75 to $100.
I'm sure glad I purchased 2 of them due to one of them having cracked disks.

Yes, the situation for buying BF2 legally is quite inconvenient at the moment, and EA/Dice's agendas questionable, but I seem to have gotten lucky -- I found a "refurbished" copy on US amazon for $2 or $3. True, the digital download would've been immediate and was something like $19.99, which I was not eager to pay, so I just chose to wait a few days to get it in the mail instead. It came really quickly (three or four days) and I installed it tonight. I played around in the single player to acquaint myself with the basic feel, and am downloading the Project Reality torrent as I type this. In fact the $3.99 shipping cost more than the game for me. The codes worked fine (it's the Deluxe Edition including BF2 and BF2 Special Forces so there were two codes).
The most annoying bit was that it was a 5 disc install and took about 2 hours of flipping discs while I watched a movie. Haven't had to install like that since Half-Life 2 first came out as a 5-disc box. The days of installing a 3GB game over multiple CDs is something I will not miss at all. Only problem is that it looks like from now on the "big" PC games all weigh in at 15GB all the way up to 40GB (Advanced Warfare and the like). Fortunately I play a lot of indies. Since I got into PC caming everything's been at my fingertips, so hopefully this is the last physical copy of a game I have to buy for a long while!
So yeah, look for a used physical copy and distract yourself for a few days while it's in the post.
P.S. If you really want to tide yourself over, you could always try out Battlefield Play4Free or Battlefield Heroes, which are free and can be downloaded through your browser. Don't know how many people are on, or the quality though. There are also a good number of fun, free or cheap FPSs I recently played through Steam - Fistful of Frags, Dystopia, Blockstorm, and Double Action Boogaloo are all highly recommendable with good communities.
