I finally got an upgrade to my old 16 kbit Internet to 50 kbit. Prior to this, I was able to connect to all PR servers just fine with decent ping, now I cannot join any. Most servers show me a 2500 ping on the browser and when trying to connect it gives me the "Could not connect to server. Check your network setting(s)" error popup.

The weird thing is, I did not change anything. I am still using the very same router with the very same settings (I never had to do any port forwarding or w/e, everything was fine by default). I have not made any changes to my firewall settings either. Really, the only thing that's different is the speed of my Internet and the way the router is hooked up to the network (now directly into the telephone socket, I removed a splitter). The only thing I heard from my provider was something along the lines of "It's all IP-based services now", but that might have just meant my telephone (which now goes into the router).

I also tried disabling the IPv6 services in my control panel, but the situation is the same as before.

Lastly, I checked some other online games to see if this was a general problem. It isn't - PR is the sole exception here.

I'm thinking it could be a DNS cache issue. or even a DNS server issue. Do you have the SAME ISP company, just an upgrade of service, or is it a new ISP?


First, try this:
How to flush DNS Cache

Windows 7
Hold down the Windows key and press R. (This will open the Run dialogue.)
Type cmd and press Enter. (This will open a command prompt.)
Type ipconfig /flushdns and press Enter.
Type ipconfig /registerdns and press Enter.
Type ipconfig /release and press Enter.
Type ipconfig /renew and press Enter.
Type netsh winsock reset and press Enter.
Reboot the computer.

Then try this:

I think you'll need to forward these ports to your PC.

Nah I'm still with the same ISP, it is just an upgrade.
Flushing DNS didn't work, I'll try some port stuff next.

Hey folks sorry for sort of necroing my own thread, it really did take me this long to work out a solution.

I tried adding a plethora of ports to my router and my firewall, even turned the latter off just to see if it would improve my situation. Nothing worked. Then, a tech-savvy guy I know advised me to enable uPnP in my router settings, upon which I quickly found out that the standard-issue router my ISP provides does in fact not have this function. Even asking customer support yielded in little result, with the going as far as telling me to "just buy another router".
Which I did. uPnP and all. Everything is working now, I can see & join servers just fine.

For those interested: Speedport routers are the problematic ones. I had a Speedport w724v (a rental one at that), now I switched to a FRITZ!box 7360.
