So I'm coming back after 4+ years, help?

Hi all,
I've been away from PR/PC gaming in general since my PC died in the late half of 2009. I've bought all my parts and I should be good to guy by the weeks end, I'm just curious as to whats changed before I get started. I think the last version I played was the earliest version of .8, but before that I had been active from .5.
I've only played one game of PR since the old PC died and it was only for about 20 minutes on a friends PC over the weekend. The only immediate thing I noticed was a 6000 second spawn time if I use the "give up" option. I was on the Fallujah map.
Aside from that what else has changed drastically and how should I go about playing again? I know that only the lifers are the ones really playing this mod at this point and I don't want to make anyone I play with for the first couple days feel like they're baby sitting me until I get the hang of things and start being a SL again myself.
From what I remember about the people who I used to play with was if you messed up or chose/picked up the wrong kit you where booted from the squad almost right away. My friend backed this up when I picked up a SL kit I had found (there was no body). He said "People get mad at you for that, they might even kick you from the server."
