Low FPS when gunning or with smoke

Hi, for some time now I experience heavy fps drops when gunning BMP/bradleys' and other vehicles. It happens whenever there is smoke (from barrel, or from smoke grenade), both drop my fps to unplayable levels, but *sigh* have to live with it.

My system:
Laptop (3.5 yrs old) loaded with Windows 7 x64
Graphics: nvidia GeForce 315M
RAM: 8GB
HDD: lots of space.

What I tried:
Setting MAX performance in powercfg and max perf in nvidia control pannel for PR:BF2.exe

Lowering graphics settings --> small/no difference in FPS drops

Shouting and raging on mumble --> does nothing but express my displeasure.

Where/when this occurs:
often on most large maps, e.g. Kamisayah, even looking at smoke effects from burning rubble on oil fields kills my fps. Smoke grenades, BMP, Bradley, Tank, etc etc.

Quite a few people have experienced the same issue and I was wondering if there is anything that can be done? I dont think my graphics chip is that outdated... played skyrim well few years ago.

I'm a little concerned over your videocard if i'm honest... Yes this is an old game but damn it really doesn't run well.

And your processor?

What kinf of cpu is it exactly? But yes probably to your second question. I and other experienced the same thing with 1.0, which was a major performance hit.

I just got Msi afterburner and realized after all this time that the bottleneck of my computer at least for PR is in fact my cpu. I've got a dell studio 1558 from 2010 I think and it says it has an i5 but obviously it's a cheaper laptop i5. It has 2 cores and 2 virtual cores. Obviously bf2 can't use the VC so I'm down to two subpar cores.
Edit: anyway my point is it may in fact be a cpu bottleneck. And you should download afterburner as well to figure it out.

@wrecker: Gave it a test... nice piece of software. Its my GPU, the usage spikes during FPS drops whilst nothing concerning occurs on the CPU, just higher usage but doesnt hit 100%.

GPU hits 99% and its definitely above 90% most of the time on PR..

@sweedensniiperr: Oh to answer your previous question my CPU is a i5-480M (dual core/4 threads).

I'm currently reviewing some settings, nvidia control panel, PR graphics settings etc. see if I can get it optimised. If I can, Ill definitely update.
