Project Reality and Forgotten Hope 2 works online by redirecting old gamespy's url for server list to their own, shared server list relying on donations from both communities to keep it running.
It's basically like gamespy's service, hosting a constantly active directory, like a digital phone book for servers to be listed and for games to phone in and connect to servers. No server list, no directory meaning entering a server IP Address manually which is not convenient.
The modding community and the remaining devs (and future devs from community) are working/contributing to update, and add to improve Project Reality's unique, immersive gameplay and to make it run as stable and smooth as possible.
Although not avaliable on Steam and on Origin EA Downloader, Battlefield 2 can still be bought from Amazon and other online retailers. There's a forum link here on this section somewhere that shows your options.
You got other gamespy alternatives for other games besides the Battlefield series, and player popularity on those servers may vary.
Squad is still in development, in it's baby steps. Link:
