An Open Letter to Gavin Ryde and the Management of Project Reality

Re: The 'Project Reality' Modification of the Battlefield 2 Game

Dear Mr. Gavin Ryde:

Thanks to some honorable and decent people in the video game industry and also in the video gaming community, it appears to me, and to them, and I am rather positive it will appear to Members of Congress, that the above modification to the Battlefield 2 video game should be re-rated ?AO? rather than their present ?T.?

Of course, you know why. But for those who read this open letter to Congress, let's delineate the main problems:
1. The use of Jihadists as a player controlled character. They wear headbands with Jihadi Hadiths, can use suicide bomb trucks in game, and use civilian human shields as gameplay tactics.
2. The game mechanic that allows US military characters to execute foreign civilians with no penalty.
3. The game mechanic that requires US military personnel to arrest and detain foreign civilians without due process as a required step to win the game.
4. The extremely racist portrayal of the Palestinian Hamas characters in the game.
5. The total disregard for sensitivities of minors who play the game since the inclusion of the new gore and ragdoll death animations.

Please put on the fast track a reassessment of these game elements, along with the use of Jihadist iconography, as I believe a failure to do so will make things even more difficult for the ESRB and the video game industry with the coming governmental inquiries into whether the ratings system is broken, as Senator Schumer has indicated.

Sincerely, Jack Thompson

this but there are some valid points. if children were to get a hand on this, they might try to replicate this bad behavior in real life at their schools.

This is where it is going to come out that Jack Thompson and EA are in cahoots to rule out video games. Starting with BF2 they stopped the selling of the game, in order to starve Project Reality's new player base.

If Congress wants the game gone, then the devs will have no choice. I wish it didn't have to come to this.

I remember in school this kid kept throwing scissors at people and he was eventually pulled out of class.

His parents let him play grand theft auto, and im sure he wouldnt be doing such violent things if gta didnt teach him to.

imagine if kids got their hands on pr and learned how to fight with real life tactics and how to make real fobs and use deviation. it would be world war 3

Yep. I get this. Let's remove computer games rather than the easy access to guns. Seems totally logical.

One time my relatives brought their 2 year old son into my house while I was playing PR. I was an IDF soldier in Gaza, and when the toddler heard some shooty noises from my speakers he revealed a hidden trigger and detonated a TNT explosive and killed everybody in the house (me included).

We need to remove this modification from the internet before every house in the world is destroyed by toddlers.

This is a serious issue guys, I understand some of you are frustrated, but at least be respectful of eachother. These are not bad arguments; some people's lives might be in danger if kids get their hands on project reality then take what they learned to school.

Children are very impressionable and whats to stop them from dressing like taliban and trying to steal their dad's motorcycle? After all, they are just kids and don't know any better.

Posting an "open letter" on the forums is definitely a way to get passed off as a troll. At least write a proper letter with signatures and post a scanned version.

Anyway, this is perhaps the strangest post I've seen next to the North Korean junk/propaganda that's been popping up for the past few minutes. If either of these is for real, which I doubt, it's funny how they're focusing on a very niche community with relatively few members to make their point.

Maybe it's one of the devs!? lol

But a dev would know PR mechanics better because, in fact, your ARE punished for executing civilians and its impossible to tell whether there's due process after an arrest

There's nothing stopping children from riding on broomstick and jumping out the window to pretend to be Harry Potter either.

That's why I'm in favor of some reasonable restrictions of certain content made available. Perhaps a background check should be initiated to ensure that children, criminals, and the mentally unstable can get access to certain games.
