Pointman

just posted this in another thread, but i thought i'd make it its own subject.
how about a feature that allowed an SL to assign a point man to his squad. i dont want to be the point man when i'm squad leader, but it's hard to get your squad to follow someone else when the rest of the squad is nothing but green dots.
example:
as SL, i assign Squadmate2 as pointman. he now shows up white to my squad, instead of green (on the minimap). now the entire squad can quickly orient themselves to the pointman and get in position. thoughts?

you mean fireteam leaderS?

i'm talking about the guy who's actually in the front position of the squad. if that position is called the fireteam leader, then yes, that's what i'm talking about.

well normally, i believe, each squad has two fire teams, alpha and bravo. each with a fireteam leader who are under the Squad leader.

well that isn't a bad idea, but I don't see why you would need that. Can't you just tell the team where to go? Just say like "lets move to "insert location"" or if you don't have a mic then use the SL's map and put a marker to where you want the squad to advance to. Then if the squad members are using more than 0.5% of their brain they can run there without you charging infront of them. And when they know where they are supposed to go they will stick together (unless they are total noobs, or just don't want to follow orders)

Any volunteers to get shot first?
Anyone...?
Somebody........?
Kidding: I do see your point. It requires formation discipline though.

i contanstly use and update my on-map orders for the squad. i'd just like to be able to differentiate one (or two) squadmates from the others for further teamwork and formation. i'm not talking about where to get the squad, i'm talking about *how* to get the squad to that location.
i will name someone the pointman when we're moving out as a squad, but after the first firefight, everything is crazy and and everyone reforms on me (the SL). the reason for this, i think, is because the SL is the easiest person to find on the mini-map. i'd love to assign a highly trusted member of my squad as the pointman. i'd tell the squad to form on him the entire round. as squadleader, i dont want to be leading every attack...
getting people to stay in formation is very tough. this might be a way to help it out a bit.

lol
and make it so that with PLA the pointman automatically gets the red neon light hat that the spec ops kit has. (for 2 reasons, 1st being that it will increase the probability that he will be shot first, and 2nd is to warn the enemies of an incoming squad)

Its a role not a class. So there is nothing to do other than pick someone and TELL them, this all ties into actual human organization and not system forced teamwork (which can't be created.)
Ideas like this only need your in game effort to make happen.

I REALLY like that idea. It would spread the team roles out even more... so you would have to play more like a team... SL and medics hanging back and covering... to keep revives and spawns up... spec ops, rifle, grenadier, and a/t would be up front fighting...as they should...
Plus I would always like playing point because I have a stong rambo urge

yah i guess it depends how tight the squad you are playing with is. I play with the [DVB] guys and with them i always know who to follow because im told. but i dont see labeling a pointman being too realistic, like to make a sep thing for it, instead just use fireteam leaders and let all the little ducks follow them...

assigning pointman = easy. you get on your mic, and say.. <insert random name here> you are on point, rally point is approx 150 metres east by the side of that tall building. Move out.

LOL. On 3 out 4 pub games, there is utter silence to the request for a point man, even when i beg or order, it is as if they becoem temporary mute.

Seriously. People will make suggestions when they could already do it ingame just by basically pretending and using your imagination, instead of trying to define things to promote teamwork with code.

i wouldnt have suggested it without TONS of ingame experience. the fact is that assigning a pointman via VOIP (something i do ingame EVERY TIME i lead my squad) isnt very effective, especially with people who i dont normally play with. take away the nametags (i know, it's being fixed), and it's almost impossible to know who to follow. how do you know where my pointman is if you cant tell who he is on the mini-map and cant see his tag?

DIGN DIGN DIGN DING DING - FUZZ, you heard it from another man.
IDing squad members is almost impossible!!!!!!!!!! Name tag distance is beign upped - good thing BUT name tags need to be on the torso and BIGGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IS IT POSSIBLE??????????????????

Just because someone is THE medic does not mean they will revive you...
You are missing my point so I'll exit stage right.

If you got good VOIP communication, that is usually enough.
"Player X, you got point. Player Y, cover our rear."
That sorts me out fine anytime I'm SL.
Having a hard time seeing this being worth the effort.

Love this topic, you see when im under a Alias for being a squad leader I usually have ppl that are really willing to listen and follow and do what there told. Usually Ill say right "Arrow Head formation" move slowly up 100 metres then stop set up a 360 perimetre and hold until further orders and Ill tell my CO what my squads doing and at any time call my unit to do what ever he need us to do.
With the Point man side of it, that's simple for example if ScarFace was in my squad id be right Sin your on point bang that's it no if and buts that's a order with another order to the rest of the squad keep it tight and still stick together.
Teamwork really really works out in good jungle maps iv noticed.

Yes, tags shouldnt matter if your squad is together as they should be. If you are X or Y role you stay that role until told otherwise, pointman is the same.
The more you add coded features to force teamwork the less teamwork you get. What do you people think was done before BF2 introduced squads? It was still possible to create your own squad just by moving together. All these features are like crutches to force people who don't have the stick together mentality to do so, and it never works as intended.
