[Help Me] Record & upload my own gameplay

Hi all,

What recording program would you recommend that allows me to capture in-game footage and audio, in-game Mumble, as well as my OWN mumble chatter, but NOT my non-mumble chatter? I don't want to be recording excerpts of my random musings, mumblings, shouting at people around the house, and occasional heavy breathing.

I'm looking to dabble in recording and uploading my own short gameplay videos in a similar style to dbzao; about 5-15 minutes of random highlight footage snipped together with very little 3rd party program additions. I thought he did a thread on this a few years ago but I can't seem to find it.

I've used FRAPS for years to A.) monitor my FPS, B.) take screenshots but I've never really rated it for video recording, as it tends to drop my FPS by about 50% whilst recording, and its raw file sizes are huge. I have about 250GB to record onto before filling my HDD.

Once I've got this bit sorted and I'm happy with it, I'll come back for more advice re editing/video software.

Cheers all.

dxtory. it'll record everything in game, in game audio, and in game mumble. as long as you set your hotkey to squad chat and not bind your local chat, you'll be fine, although it will still capture local mumble.

db's stuff, is this what you're looking for?

yea ive heard good things about dxtory, i use shadowplay myself. to get rid of the out of game talking you do you can record your voice with audacity as you play, and sync your voice to the game when you are editing. that way you can cut out any unwanted sounds from your mic without messing with ingame audio. useful for loud sneezes, talking to someone in your house etc.

DXtory is good, smaller files, better performance than fraps. Another option is OBS (Open Broadcast Software) which can be used for streaming or local recordings. OBS can make tiny files, with very little performance hit, but requires more tinkering and tends to output files in less handy formats like mp4 or flv.

I use both, depending on what mood takes me. Basic editing with windows movie maker is fine, but Sony Vegas is what I've been using and would recommend.

Good luck with it! Cheers, Murkey.

If you happen to own one of the latest (2~3 years back) Nvidia GPU's, consider using GeForce Experience, that's what I'm using.

It records "everything", but doesn't store it as a permanent file. So when you happen to have had an epic moment, you just press Alt+F10 and it saves eveything you did the past 5 minutes (you can adjust the time frame).

Here's my video tutorial on how I record, edit and export PR gameplay:

About not recording the audio of other stuff besides your comms, in Fraps you can set it up so it only records the mic input when you press a certain key. But then the problem is that we have several keys for comms (local, squad, squad leader, commander, etc).

Recently Tbob told me how he does it. He uses a program (that I don't remember the name, maybe autohotkey?) that mimics a press of a specific key when you press other keys. So let's say you make it so Fraps will record your mic input if the "F12" key is pressed (just as an example). So when you press H (default local speech) the program presses F12 for you. When you press Num0 (default squad radio) the program presses F12 as well. And so on.

As you can see, after a bit of configuration you could make it work pretty well. I will try to get him to share his way of doing it in here. I might actually try it myself.

I use shadowplay, never had issues with it.

Yeah, like DB said I use an autohotkey script to trigger the shadowplay push to talk for multiple push to talk buttons.

This is the script I currently have:

Code: Select all

#SingleInstance force
#NoEnv
SendMode Input
Process, priority, , High

;Must run as admin to work when in PR

;Only activate when in PR, can remove if it causes issues
#IfWinActive PRBF2

;Mouse side buttons
~*XButton1::Gosub, wait
~*XButton2::Gosub, wait

;All default bindings with and without numlock
~*H::Gosub, wait
~*Numpad0::Gosub, wait
~*Numpad1::Gosub, wait
~*Numpad2::Gosub, wait
~*Numpad3::Gosub, wait
~*Numpad4::Gosub, wait
~*Numpad5::Gosub, wait
~*Numpad6::Gosub, wait
~*Numpad7::Gosub, wait
~*Numpad8::Gosub, wait
~*Numpad9::Gosub, wait
~*NumpadDiv::Gosub, wait
~*NumpadMult::Gosub, wait

~*NumpadIns::Gosub, wait
~*NumpadEnd::Gosub, wait
~*NumpadDown::Gosub, wait
~*NumpadPgDn::Gosub, wait
~*NumpadLeft::Gosub, wait
~*NumpadClear::Gosub, wait
~*NumpadRight::Gosub, wait
~*NumpadHome::Gosub, wait
~*NumpadUp::Gosub, wait
~*NumpadPgUp::Gosub, wait

;Press key and wait until all keys are released
wait:
	Send {F15 down}

	Keywait, XButton1
	Keywait, XButton2

	Keywait, H
	Keywait, Numpad0
	Keywait, Numpad1
	Keywait, Numpad2
	Keywait, Numpad3
	Keywait, Numpad4
	Keywait, Numpad5
	Keywait, Numpad6
	Keywait, Numpad7
	Keywait, Numpad8
	Keywait, Numpad9
	Keywait, NumpadDiv
	Keywait, NumpadMult

	Keywait, NumpadIns
	Keywait, NumpadEnd
	Keywait, NumpadDown
	Keywait, NumpadPgDn
	Keywait, NumpadLeft
	Keywait, NumpadClear
	Keywait, NumpadRight
	Keywait, NumpadHome
	Keywait, NumpadUp
	Keywait, NumpadPgUp

	Send {F15 up}
return

Hey guys,

So I finally got around to deciding to give this a go. I'm tinkering around with Fraps now with the settings I saw in your video dbzao, but I get a huge FPS drop when I start recording. I'm like, 80 in FSA main on Sbeneh Outskirts, but recording drops it to 40 and it doesn't "feel" like 40, it feels like 20.

Fraps is not a good idea. Reduces your framerate by about 50%.. Shadow play I lose 1fps (no joke)

I'll give Shadowplay a try, thanks.

I'm currently using an older version of Bandicam (because it includes a different codec package) and I get pretty good results (minimal fps loss, good file size of about 10 GB/h at 1080p 60fps).

I will probably try Dxtory soon as an alternative, but it will be hard to beat this imo.

I can't use shadowplay since I own a Radeon R9 290, wasn't impressed by AMDs Raptr/Gaming Evolved application though I didn't play with the settings much either. I also tried MSI Afterburner for recording (since I run it anyway for fan control) but I was disappointed by the file sizes.
