How long a map takes to make very much depends a, on the complexity of the map, b, the size of the map, and c, the mapper himself. Generally speaking thou it takes around a year for most mappers to make a large, detailed map but experience can cut that down quite a bit. As such I wouldn't recommend making over a 2km map for your first map, especially if its an urban map with lots of statics in it. A 4km terrain map with very little statics on it can be done pretty quickly if you know what your doing and I can make a full 4km terrain map in under a week even.
