[Map] Hue City (2km) [Concept/WIP]

I'm looking into creating a Hue City urban map for PR:V

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Hu%E1%BA%BF

Image

The black line is a rough outline for the map. I will probably truncate the city in the bottom left hand corner of the bock to save map performance. The area on the North side of the river will start as NVA territory, and the South side will be US territory. The grid in the first row 2nd in from the left will be the NVAs main, the citadel. The grid in the second row from the top 1st from the right will be the US main at MACV.

Image

This is a reference image for the South side. I will keep anything in the photo but the area outside will be forest.

I'm having trouble tracking down good quality aerial photos or maps of the time so if anybody finds some good ones that would be nice.

In terms of combat the US will get M113s, maybe a tank but don't think US has a standard non-flamethrower tank, and standard light vehicles, jeeps, logis, ect. The NVA will get logis, and hopeful preplaced SPG emplacements, don't think SPG-9s were common in Vietnam but recoiless rifles sure were.

Certainly one of the most iconic battles of the Vietnam war and I would love to see this map :D

Although for starters, wouldn't call it "Hue City", would call it "The Battle for Hue" or just "Hue"

Next a much more detailed map plan would be advisable. Grab a Google Earth image or a complete map of the area and detail flags and mains etc, + attack routes etc.

The hardest thing for this map will be finding statics that fit tbh, since this is a historic city and has many unique buildings, along with many of the buildings available in PR look a bit too modern with AC units and solar panels etc all over them but hopefully you can make it work :)

BTW, pretty good (short) documentary on the battle here from 30mins: https://youtu.be/5SjD279yvLU?t=1800
Would possibly be worth portraying different parts of the battle though different layers, as wall as having the Large layer, possibly a couple more, trying to portray the entire thing :)

The problem with google earth is that I don't know how much the city has changed. The modern map shows a bunch of apartment looking buildings but the historical map shows more discrete buildings.

That was the other idea that I had, as it would allow for more detail on the map, but then again it might be interesting to have a more expansive urban map.

Do they have a PT-76?

EOD had loads of tanks btw. None are in PR at the moment, but if you really need one, well... :)

Ye, was meaning google earth as a rough template but ideally you want to find a decent map :)

And as AD said, assets are not really the proble and ye, NVA has a PT-76 ingame, dunno if they used it during this battle thou?

PT-76 would fit here better than it fits in Hill 488 alt now in my opinion. Good and interesting asset and it is barely used.

Researching a bit more the US used a fairly large amount of armor, form where I've read/watch M48s and M50s seemed to be the armor of choice, M113s were probably there too but they were a dime a dozen in Vietnam. Couldn't find anything about NVA armor.

That was very helpful thank you :)

The editor is giving me trouble as it always is. https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f27-pr-bf2-support/135939-static-object-editor-crash.html

Could somebody create a vote:
1. Smaller more detailed urban map
2. Larger less detailed urban map

I want to know what people think of those two options.

Added a poll. Personally I would love to see a larger map with less detail but I understand that is a lot of work.

Honestly I wouldn't care as I would just like to see it finished. Not gonna vote.

Probably best to draw up the two sizes you would make, and their gameplay plan since its a 50-50 split right now, then can give much better feedback :)

This is the 2km less detailed map. The green spaces would be more open dead spaces being something like a lightly wooded park. The river would be widened and building would be less densely packed. The gray circles are flags. The Red Ds are places the NVA can spawn at the start of a map, and are heavily reinforced. The Red S is a spawnpoint for the NVA. The Gray circles with the blue dots are flags that after captured by the US cannot be recapped, and will trigger spawns for Swiftboats and or PBRs and or m113s. The flags located behind NVA defensive spawns you unlock more light transports and boats. The NVA would get no armor but hopefully lots of placed AT weapons, like in Dragon Fly. The US would get standard light vehicles, plus a non-respawning m47 tank, plus the previously mentioned Swiftboats/PBRs/M113s. Areas outside of flags might fade towards dead space more quickly. The citdel might be just a walled compund with a few of the buddest temples in it. The moat region would also produce more dead space. maybe a chance to try out a 1.5 km map?

Image

This is the 1km more detailed map that would be like a Fallujah West but in the Vietnam War. Most of it is centered in the Citadel where the heaviest and final fighting occurred in the city. The green square is a major wall, Great Wall of China type static, the NVA would get random spawnpoints to defend the flag caps. The wall will have broken sections and ladders to assist US assaults in. Despite the random spawn point neither team starts with flags outside of their mains. The US main with a gray dot could be a captureable point that could cause the US to ticket bleed? Both teams would get light vehicles and the US would get 1-2 m113s.
