Tips on making dense, convincing forest?

So I recently opened bf2editor after six years and came to realise that I have forgotten everything about it (except for the crashes). D: So to freshen my memory I started an ambitious map project which requires a small but dense oak forest patch. Are there any good approaches into making forest that doesn't look like a bunch of random trees and bushes sitting on grass?
Obviously without tanking the framerate too much. I'd be thankful for any help.
