Lower graphic settings seem to produce much less smoke (or none at all at long range?). I often get killed by snipers in tow emplacements which are well smoked.

Or you know, they shoot into the smoke. If they saw the exact position of the tow its an easy thing to shoot you in it, even if smoked. Smoke doesnt prevent bullets from killing you.

It's a known issue that lower settings can cause issues with smokes. We're looking into it for next version.

It wasn't just a lucky shot, I was outside a long time with smoke up then I got in and got shot instantly.

Just got killed in Muttrah on TOW with smoke on a Range excactly 600m +/-25m. Switched team to see where the sniper is ... It was no lucky shot, then he would have fired blind, never did that.
I'd rather have ugly smoke that is working on every PC than this. Maybe he had aimbot, who knows, anyways got his name.

You should not say that he is a cheater because you died on Smoke and he did not had Thermals on his Rifle...
Things that may had happened:
1- someone pointed where you were, he started camping, and when the smoke had dissipated to a certain point, he used that moment to shot you
2- he saw smoke, made some "calculations" w/ the smoke format, and give a luck shot, and manage to hit
Like I sad in another thread, Smoke don't make you invisible or invincible, it just give your concealment...
I personally don't like to use Smoke on the TOW, because for me, that give away the position for tanks or Apcs, I mean, w/ this tact being used every time, Tank crews will look for smoke, and can try to engage if they think that is a TOW

Its not just low graphics. On Sarema with the BTR from very long range in the water I can see through the USMC's APC smoke. It's like the smoke rises everywhere except where the APC is, and I have every setting on max detail.
On a side note fires and sparks are not blocked for me by smoke, if there is a flame on the map it gets rendered through the smoke for me.

Even in BR the smoke is broken in long range

There are a couple of things that limit draw distance of smoke and other effects.
1. Smoke started outside of your view wont render. This is something especially trans pilots will know. SL calls you in and say to drop on colored smoke, but when you reach there is no smoke in sight. This is because they drop too early and you are not in range yet, when you enter view range it wont draw for you. Mostly an issue on smaller view distance maps.
2. Effects have a hardcoded draw limit. "particleSystemManager.viewDistance float -> float" is supposed to define it, but it cannot be changed from 500m. Smoke does seem to render past 500m tho, so no idea what the real maximum is.
We are aware of these issues and try to solve them, but since those are hardcoded behaviours it is tough to change. In the past patches we limited the effects settings to no longer allow the lowest setting as that reduced the draw range.
