Connection Problems

Noticed that I've been having some problems with lag recently. My internet connection has been running at 500 kB/s. I'm wondering what everyone else's connection speed is running at and if you have been having problems with lag. I used this site to find out what my connection speed is.
http://us.mcafee.com/root/speedometer/default.asp And I'm wondering if you guys have any tips to less lag.

I like
this speed tester better, lets you pick to where, and gives U/L and D/L speeds. Also no lag here, beyond the site downtime we had the last few days.

500kb/s, Is quite slow for a download speed although fast for upload. If in fact that's your download speed I can see why your lagging, as you have no head-room for net interruption spikes. Can you state what speed down/up your ISP promises you? For example I'm promised a 7mb connection I get 7,200kb/s down and 480kb/s up. Try testing for optimum performance here:

yeah we just got onto a wirless one just recently. how much difference would that make? and for gaming whats the difference between upload speed and download speed?

Well if your truly only getting 500kb/s downstream on your wireless and you could easily get 1-3mb/s (1mb = 1024kb) on a DSL or cable connection, I'd say it would make a big difference in your gaming experience.
Generally speaking:
Download speed = The speed at which the server sends you information about other payers status (enemy bullets and movement)
Upload speed = The speed at which you send your information to the server (your bullets and movement)

Well Dan I hate to tell you this brother, but that's really really slow:
0.05mb/s = 50k upload (most people get at least 250k)
0.35mb/s = 348k download (these days the minimum is 1.5mb about 1,700k)
If you miss-read your speed to 0.5mb up (512k)and 3.5mb down (4,000k) that would seem more normal.
If your truly running as slow as you indicated no wonder your getting lag. Canada has if not better at least as good broadband service as the U.S. So man look into upgrading or switching providers, and if you think there's a mistake call the service desk at your ISP and send someone out pronto.
If you don't mind me asking; how much are you paying for the service?
The Mcafee test is extremely low...

I have used various speed (Bandwidth) sites, and get various results from all of them. The one from Mcafee is the slowest results I get. I find it interesting that some speed test sites that give me a DL of 7 - 9 Mbps while the Mcafee one lists me as 500kbps. Something is wrong with the Mcafee site. Go to other sites (speedtest.net, bandwidthspeedtest.com) and test from various locations.
Good Luck,
Turbo

Yeah that mcaffee seems off... most sites give me around 4mbps up 300kbs down (which is what it should be) but mcaffee was like 500kbs up
that being said, im on a wireless network and disconnects are an utter *****. That effects my xbox live gaming alot more than PC however
