About future PR in Steam.

Question to developers command:
Do you have thought about the future PR in steam(or anywhere else) as the project "Free to play"?
This will add popularity to your project and, probably, will support the development and another things.
Is it possible or you think there will be problems, with rights on the battlefield 2 or with EA games company?

No, just no. Even more people without microphones or brains would be the result...

Steam would shoot themselves in the foot if would allow PR be distributed via their service. PR has broken EULA and if you would give this to Steam, EA would be like $_$ because why you release basically hacked content that has their trademarks all over the place (speaking about engine) and they would sue Steam for allowing this to happen or smt like that.

Maybe I am wrong and would ok, but... There IMHO is too many "but" involved.

Those on 1.2.1 should be able to patch to 1.3, in which case your BF2 files may be modified slightly, but it shouldn't cause any issues with other mods such as ReviveBF2 and FH2. That said though, if you do play other mods, you should probably grab the full install and install PR:BF2 to a separate directory to avoid any future possible conflict.

Those who just play PR:BF2 may as well grab the full installer as well, uninstall BF2 and PR:BF2 1.2, and start fresh with 1.3. Will save you a few GB's of hard drive space. But yeah, the patch should be there, providing it works (still gotta test it, there might not be one if it breaks things, we'll see)

Legalities aside, it's about the only thing we can do to keep PR:BF2 alive at this time. We're not as ready as EA/DICE were to let our game die and all our hard work go to waste. And like others have said in the thread, abandonware, etc, I don't think EA will care too much. Of course, if they actually do care, their legal team is more than welcome to send us a cease and desist order, and we'll simply revert back to the way things are at the moment. Naturally, that'd do wonders for their public image.

But anyway, it's not like we've ever followed the EULA. Ever since we included the BF2:SF content in PR (when was that, 0.6?), we've been breaking the EULA. Add to that the 100p servers, the new master server, things like PRMumble, BUIS, and a whole bunch of other stuff... The list of things we've "illegally" done is actually rather large. I'm still yet to ever receive a single message from EA or DICE, so, well, shrug...

So to those looking to buy BF2, and you can wait and don't want to play other mods, you should probably hold off until we release 1.3. To the inevitable question of when 1.3 will be released, when it's ready ;) .

Ok engine and the core systems are of Dice and EA, but PR added so much content that not much of intelectual property ( with exception of engine and base code which was broken and they do not provide support for it ) is actually used.

What I want to say also is that they also sold so many copies of BF2 because of mods like PR, FH, AIX etc...last thing they did was cancelation of MP support, so whats left from the base game? Nothing. They should give back to those comunites by at least allowing them to publish FIXED game along with their modded content. But I dont think they actually care. Steam would not care for it too. No sales, no profit, just providing service for free for hosting files. Nope.

We not only break EULA, we also use content of other mods (with permission to do it under the current distribution methods), we use payed additions (by developers such as sound, code and other libraries). Meanwhile steam has no place for mods except for source mods and a very few exceptions which were made in corporation with the original developers (just cause MP) which we don't have with DICE/EA. We don't want it, DICE/EA doesn't want it and steam doesn't want it.

This has been said a 1000x times and PR going standalone doesn't change anything really. So yeah, never gonna happen.

Shame that there isn't a global mod sharing tool and updater that would work like steam though, that I would be intrested in :) Desura tried but is kinda shit :D

If you were to take out every DICE-made static like buildings, you would have some very barren maps.

There is still a lot of original BF2 content in PR. A lot.
FH2 on the other hand has a lot more original assets.

You are right I stand corrected. But it can be replaced if needed which would actually fix a lot of issues and add new systems and damage models/effects if needed.

And since it wont be on Steam or alike it just doesnt matter. If BF3 does not open its source, maybe the future of PR mod is actually a standalone F2P game based of BF2 PR. And I dont see BF2 going to abandonware soon, so lets wait and see.

That awkward moment that PR is the only F2P game that is actually free. . .

I believe that if PR could get their permissions together for the other assets they've used within PR, it should totally try to push itself onto Steam, not for their own reasons, but to set a prescient within software use and limitations. I'm certain the EFF would like to involve themselves here.

You are, because Squad isnt F2P and completely off the mark of what is being asked.
