2142 Port

TBH I haven't paid much attention to PR:BF2 development for several years now and have just been hanging out in off-topic. Anyways, I just wanted to briefly ask (and I did search):
Years ago there was some talk of porting PR:BF2 over to 2142 because 2142 offered a slightly improved version of the Refractor Engine (allowed for better ballistics modelling, etc). This whole idea was dismissed as impractical because it made no sense to force everybody who owned BF2 to go out and buy 2142 just to get some minor engine improvements.
... But now, as far as I can tell, 2142 is free.
So is a port now possible? Is it practical?

Short answer: No.
Long answer: We dont know. We did a lot of things that are likely to no longer work in 2142 and would require lots of work, however we have no idea how much work and what challenges await us. So maybe, some day.

I think this will not happen, PR is not a simple mod, they have alot of things going on in the background in order to make something happen. And the amount of work they've put in the binaries and config... the whole content they have, will be a very slowww port, time that can be used to improve something in the actual mod...

BF2142 offers nice things like weather, destroyable child objects on vehicles, automatic cannons and many other things. Don't know if it's visually much better than BF2?
It would require a massive amount of work to "port" it over: you'd need to make 100 players available again, integrate Mumble, increase squad size, port/create shaders, fix Python, etc. Also there's no commander in BF2142, is there? Plus next to the fact you're using BF2 stuff in BF2142 - this was never allowed by EA, but maybe that's no big deal anymore these days

.
Still, I wouldn't mind to see the full potential of that engine! Someone should do a Proof of Concept then

Just reading the possibilities is giving me a hard on. I'm hoping the devs would even just play around with the engine and see whats possible! AfterDune plss!

It does, in fact have the commander feature, plus animatable wheels and lots of other things. This means that a realistic horse 'vehicle' can be made with legs moving naturally instead of rotating like a wheel
The BF2Editor can technically load 2142 maps, not sure though if it will work the same with ported PR maps.

I have seen videos of horses in BF2142 which looked really nice. I can't seem to find them anymore though.

There's no deadline set, but it's something that we may do in the future.
At the moment, I'm at the stage of experimenting, and documenting things to see what works, what doesn't. But I'll mostly work on PR:BF2
