Bullet "cracks" sound unrealistic

Just a quick thread hopefully, why does the bullet "crack" sound so much better in older versions of Project Reality?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OahKQ1y0JK8

compared to...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2ci_ByYm9g

The problem is there is too much variation of noise when its the same type of round coming at you, there shouldn't be any kinda of sound randomization. It also sounds pretty cartoonish at times and hearing the sound of dirt "kicking up" when bullets are flying ain't that realistic also.

Compare these video links to actually receiving fire in rifle range pits

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrJOUWdZw40

Don't pull up Syrian Civil War footage as reference. The cameras the Insurgents/FSA fighters have are potatoes and they ain't that great at picking up sound very well IMO.

Even the video I posted above isn't 100% accurate but the first clip from dbzao's channel sound exactly like real life.

I wanted to make this thread for awhile but never got around to it. Overall the sound design is great in this game but this has really been bothering me lately.

Been thinking about this for a while actually, i think most people (including me) were kinda overwhelmed by all the nice new sounds when 1.0 came out that they just forgot about the changes to bullet cracks.

That's not to say the old bullets cracks were 100% perfect though, they still sounded quite cartoony.

IMO the issue predates v1.0, perhaps a few years earliar but I can't date it exactly.

I looked at some old pre 1.0 footage, (v0.75-.097) some of the very close "cracks" were done really well. But the "pew pew" sound you hear is a little Hollywood and you hear it a lot.

Its hard to come across proper really early PR footage, but the v.032 version I have in the OP is definitely best version and close to RL.

This video is better, when you're in long enough you can tell if that bullet is intended for you or the target next to yours without even looking for the bullet holes as the bullets impact the targets. You can subtle tell the difference between a loud crack for the target 8 feet from you as compared to the really loud CRACK from the target 3 feet from you.

Tbh 0.98 soundmod v 0.3-0.5 sounds were better than what current sounds are. Many sounds are messed up in relation to each other. Lots of sounds like boats/helis are too loud while cannons and even turbine engines are quiet.

Many .98 sounds were better. But the hollywood "pew pew" has definetely been around for a while.

Please change the Techi noise, very very important.

Bumping this thread,

I played this game recently called Arma 3 and ....holy **** those bullet crack sounds are the best I've ever seen in a game.

How can I add sounds on bullet impacts? and where I find thos explosion materials and how to change them?

Pretty sure bullet impacts make no noise

Well it probably does.... but the "crack" comes from the bullet going super sonic over your head

What explosion materials are you talking about?

So those sound of bullets hitting around are the fly-by not the impact ones?

I'm talking about this: on the projectile code found on PR and Pony weapons (also on vanilla L96A1):

rem ---BeginComp :D efaultDetonationComp ---
ObjectTemplate.createComponent DefaultDetonationComp
ObjectTemplate.detonation.explosionMaterial 3001
ObjectTemplate.detonation.explosionRadius 3
ObjectTemplate.detonation.explosionForce 0
ObjectTemplate.detonation.explosionDamage 0
ObjectTemplate.detonation.detectionRadius 1
ObjectTemplate.detonation.maxDepthForExplosion 2
ObjectTemplate.detonation.detonateOnWaterCollision 0

Why does it have to explode without any damage or explosion effect?

Wouldn't is trigger the impact effect and sound on collision anyway even without the explosioMaterial?

Yes, the "crack" is the sound of the bullet flying by you. If you pull targets at the 500m line, you can notice a very slight delay between the hole appearing on your target, and hearing the actual gun fire in the distance.

Yeah not a developer of any kind so I'm not so sure

To what exact sound do you think, because there are several types?
Several of them are active at the same time.I looked at all 3 videos.
-There is a different background around your video. Each material has a variation of sounds, on each material there are at least 10+ variations of sounds.
-bullet-fly-by
-impact
-rico

I've thought about this in a number of occasions, actually.

To be honest, I loved the "POW" and the "SNAP" of the bullets flying past my head for a while, but it quickly came to me that real gunfire actually sounds a lot more like this:

I absolutely understand that PR is running on what can be considered an "ancient" engine, but still, I wonder if it's possible to make distant fire sound like those "pops" that you can hear on many videos like this, such as the likes of Funker530 and so on, instead of hearing your typical gun sounds in the game.

What do you guys think?

The answer is yes.The sound can be changed in engine.
"I absolutely understand that PR is running on what can be considered an "ancient" engine"-keep in mind that their newest engine is just an upgrade to this one.

I love that answer :D

But now my question is: How likely is it for the DEVs to actually change the sounds to similar ones, such as the ones in the showcased videos in this thread?

From this one of your videos, I've isolated one sound for now. It was looted from a burst of fire.I'm not sure which machine gun is the sound,I think that m2 ...and thanks for the sound video, I hope that it will help someone like me

Depends if it's good enough to include it

I have forgotten about this topic. This was the point my messages. To make sounds from real videos, better than sampled.I just pulled out the sound from Avenged_Fate video inserted into the game test and this is the result:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFH-hCvwdaE

The m249 with optic sound is from Pr original, the m249 without optic is from video sound. The same weapon but different sound. It seems a little natural for me.It's not perfect, but it's just a lack of time.
