They dont let people host custom servers.

This is our game, and you will play it our way.

This Centralized model is obsolete and will go the way of the dodo.

Open Source and Decentralize your work, make it as easy as possible for all to access and use, if you want it to thrive .

Nah, The server license is incredibly easy to get and apply for. It allows the devs to correctly police servers that break rules such as modifying the game thus ensuring that gameplay on maps is consistent.

lol, it is, in fact, the thing that saved this mod in its early days, where before server licencing, server admins would do so many crappy server-side mods, like super short respawn times on vehicles etc, that it ended up playing like vBF2, but with more deadly weapons, and you could never find a consistent server to play on.

If we opened things up to server-side modding again, you would end up with the same issue of players not agreeing with the server settings/mods and it would in fact just mean fewer players on each server as they would all be spread out across different settings they prefer, and it would just kill the mod/game faster.

The "Real reason" why this mod/game isn't as popular as it once was, is simply because it is so old and on an engine that has pretty much reached it limits of capabilities, with a lot of competition (if not direct) from other games on much newer and prettier engines.

The fact that PR has survived this long is a testament to the server licencing (among many other things), tell me what other games, let alone mods, have stood the test of time as well as PR, and that allow servers to be modified as much as they like from the core game/mod they run?

Total horseshit, Halflife thrived on player customization and many mods from it are older than your mod.

It seems like the 3 big servers are AFRAID of competition from people with different ideas.

How about you let people try their ideas. and if your servers are good enough they will survive, instead of stamping out competition with a blanket ban.

On a separate note, can you even claim ownership and license assets clearly owned by EA games ?

We already do, people are more than welcome to do whatever server-side modding they want on passworded servers, otherwise we'd just drop it and close every possibility to have change game.
