The future of bots in Project Reality

I love to play offline in games like Project Reality, but the AI is very un-responsive to orders, and very VERY dumb most of the times.
I know most of the stuff is hardcoded but is there hope for better AI someday? I feel most modern games stray away from the idea of a psuedo "multi-player" experience with offline bots like older games back when internet was an issue for most people.
Maybe a third-party bot system that controls bots outside of Project Reality? Like a fake player connection being played by a "commander" program outside of the scope of the Refractor engine.
I haven't been in the loop with PR lately and was wondering if better bots is a thing that the team is striving the achieve!
What do you think about this subject?
