WAC Squad Training - Day 1 (AAR)

Greetings!

Well Ive been playing PR 0.5 and notice alot of squad leaders are not quite up to par.

So I have decided to make some days for training squad leaders.

Now this is for any and all squad leaders, not necesarrily 'new players'. I will go over the basics of how to form a 'great' squad. Its really quite easy to do, but there is a certain way to go about doing it in BF2, that guarantees you the most success. Also I hope to get tips from other squad leaders as I think, you can always be learning and add cool tactics/strategies to your own.

So anyways, the first training days will be:

Wednesday Febuary 21st 1900 EST
Thursday Febuary 22nd 1900 EST
Friday Febuary 23rd 1900 EST

The training will take place on one of the gloryhoundz servers, I have to ask fritz which one but I will post as soon as I find out. Training will commence about 1905 and will be at least 2 hours long. If you cannot commit for 2 hours, dont bother signing up.

Please post if you can make it to one of these days. If you have always wanted to try out being a SL, but had no idea how to go about doing it, then sign up and I can help you out :)

All players attending MUST have BF2 voip & a mic. It is impossible to have an organised squad if you do not have a mic.

Because I am only one man, I am limiting the training to 5 players per night. So That is 15 players in 3 days. The good thing is that, those 15 players can in turn teach others, so if this training is popular, it can expand quickly, and the ones that are taught can teach others.

The lesson plan will go something like:

- How to manage your squad (radio check, kicking players, keeping players in line, etc).
- How to not die constantly.
- How to setup your squad kits.
- How to read the BF2 map as a squad leader.
- How to teach your medics and riflemen what to do.
- How to teach your AT infantry to take out targets.
- Suppresive Fire
- Fireteams and Fire Team Leaders
- Spacing while in movement
- Fire and Movement
- How best to use rallypoints.
- How to defend a CP.
- How to assault a CP.
- How and when to retreat.
- How to succesfully play as an infantry squad including: Infantry formations, tactics for open terrain and FIBUA.
- How to use a jeep as a team asset.
- How to succesfully play as an APC platoon. (might not get to this)
- How to succesfully play as an armor platoon (might not get to this)
- How to succesfully play as close air support (might not get to this)
- the basics of how to play roles: rifleman, medic, AT. learning how to teach new players these basics.
- emphasis, if a player doesnt know, then spend a few minute with them and go over it before moving out. This saves alot of headache when your in the field and your rifleman is just throwing ammo bags left and right in plain site on a road while a tank coming right for you.
- emphasis sorting your squad out right off the start
- locating members of your squad who being retarded by clicking on their player arrow on the map. It will highlight their name and you can tell them 'mcnoob get over here and watch your arc, stop trying to hump that flagpole for points!'
- using transport vehicles: never let a blue guy drive, never get in an unknown blue guys chopper, etc
- never drive the transport vehicle directly to the flag, always park and hop out beforehand or risk certain death
- DO NOT abandon your vehicle, or at least blow them up, so they will respawn. When you take a humvee it is your team asset, and if you are no longer going to use it, have a squad member park it somewhere useful so someone else will get some use out of it. If you just abandon your team asset, it will sit there for an entire round, and it will be YOUR FAULT!

If you want to learn some of these things but dont want to be a squad leader, than join me in Gloryhoundz if you see me, my squad name is WAC (it stands for We Are not Retarded). Dont be offended if your kicked from the squad, I let everyone have a chance but sometimes I need to make room for real-life friends. If you do not respond to my VOIP (if no mic you must at least respond in text or via radio comms) you WILL be kicked.

I didn't make the whole training session unfortunately. I'm going on a three day snowboarding trip tomorrow morning and so I had to pack and make reservations and such, as well as help a friend with her physics. But what I was there for was great, and I took notes (I know, I'm a nerd.... but I *did* just have four midterms and *am* in the midst of Reading Week, so I'm allowed to be like that). Here's what was discussed in the first part of the session (fuzz I assume you don't mind me posting this, but if you do just go ahead and edit it, or if you don't have priviledges have a mod do it, I don't mind. I won't be here the next three days to do it myself though).

-Use the caps lock screen to identify smacktards *by name* and get them in line.
-Go down the line of your squad, doing a radio check. It's OK if they don't have VOIP. The important thing is that they can understand.
-Give a move command away from blue smacktards at the beginning of the game, so that nobody is tempted to go run off and dance about with the tards or hop in a vehicle.
-Use kicking fairly, but often enough if you need to. Don't be afraid to kick.
-On caps screen, dead people show up pointing straight north. Use this to predict what's going to happen before it does.
-Assign kits for the whole round, unless someone has a serious problem with a kit or you need to specifically have someone change to a specialized role. So make sure to tell them at the beginning to spawn the same kit if they die.
-Go down the list before first spawn, assigning kits.
-Standard kit setup:
2 riflemen, 2 medics, 1 light AT, you
-Tell them basic advice if they're new, before you leave your first move command at main base. Stuff like "always put three ammo bags together in a pile at a low point (so they don't slide). Don't approach ammo bags for the first couple seconds. Let them settle." Also tell them how to use the bandages to "shock" someone out of the terrain if you can't defib them.

We covered collumn and line formations, fire teams, ordering flankers while giving covering fire, and ordering shifts in fire to avoid hitting flankers. I didn't take notes then, as we were moving around and stuff.

-Don't always have your squad at the front lines. Don't always take vehicles. Use lulls to discuss some of the "finer points" of not being a smacktard, so that when you're in the shit, your squad knows what to expect of you. Intersperse your front assaults with defending. If you're always on the front, guys will start being smacktards and you'll get tired of always trying to keep them in line.

-You don't have to always use micro-managing commands. Have your pointman lead you toward your longterm move commands, allowing him to pick small things like whether to go over this hill or behind this berm, etc.
-Have a second in command to keep your guys in line if you die.
-If you die, stay on your caps screen, continuing to give orders.
-Tell your AT guy not to waste his AT on simple one or two man targets, or tanks. Save it for lightly armored vehicles or rare occurances where a whole squad is all bunched up together.

if i can just add one small point i have used recently...

when spawning on a squad rally point..first move laterally (left to right) away from it before advancing to the battle front...prevents your squad from creating a line of bodies straight back to your RP...

my 2 cents

Thanks for taking notes JP.
I am very new to PR so could someone please enlighten me as to,
' Also tell them how to use the bandages to "shock" someone out of the terrain if you can't defib them.'

Thanks in advance!

I have had the pleasure of being in 'Fuzzhead' squad once and i was amazed by his patience with an obvious newbie.
I salute you sir!
keep up the great work.

Sometimes a player model can end up 'buried' in the terrain of say a hill, by accurately throwing the bandage pack at him, you can sometimes jolt the downed soldier model out of the terrain they are in, enough to revive him effectively.

Greetings,

This seems like a fantastic idea. I have interest in signing up, but am unable to make these dates. Any interest in hosting this training again? Maybe in the next few weeks? Anyone that is interested in more training sessions, pipe in so the trainer can get a count of how many would be interested in a second session.

Okay, tried on TWO computers to get on Gloryhoundz West .5/ABR server and both computers will not connect to Glory only. I can connect elsewhere though. Very odd. I will try one more time, but if I don't show by 7:20, give away my slot.

This is VERY frustrating btw! Anyone else every run into this?

I'd like to toss my hat in for the next round of lessons (if timing works out). Also if you need targets to practice on I can play spray and pray lone wolf if need be.

Thanks again, Sgt. Mjr. Fuzzhead, for a great session! Hopefully some or all of the ideas will be useful as I explore leadership further, though I think I'll be taking it slow with the usual pickup groups I end up in. Pity training was only 2 hours, not 2 days, but I'm not looking a gift horse in the mouth!

Right, now to try to beat some public-server squaddies into shape...I've already kicked two people from my squad for not replying to VOIP since the training, less than an hour ago (I've lacked the confidence to kick anyone before, rather just making the best of the squad I manage to pick up, but now I can take on the world! :p ).

I've been working on the videos all day :s... they should all be up in a day on youtube...

Excuse my shoddy editing, I'm self taught at Premier, and I work it all out myself at that. I hope 'yall enjoy it when its done. Also it is done quickly so thats why it is not crash hot in terms of editing, if I took lots of time to edit it all, it wouldn't be up for weeks, and ffs the point gets across without the fancy scene spilts/fades/pink furry flashes... Plus I don't know how to do pink furry flashes :d

I made an effort not to cut a lot of it out, so that everyone can essentially go through the training for themselves, as if they got to go forthemselves. For this reason it make be longwinded, but trust me I cut out a lot of footage, and left in everything that was valueble.

I did this for the benefit of others, I rekon lots of people will check it out...
