Al Basrah problems?

This has been irritating the hell out of me. I have a 6600gt, 1gig ram with a AMD 64bit3000+ - I run BF2 and PR at Medium setttings (Dynamics off, lights low, AA 4x) and get roughly 40-65 FPS, drops maybe 10 to 20 more when a ton of **** is going on. This is on every map except one, Al Basrah.

I don't know what it is, but everytime that map happens to come along on the map rotation it takes 2x longer to load than any other map and roughly 5-10 minutes to stop stuttering like a jack-hammer. I don't understand it and quite frankly I'm exhausted trying to figure it out. I ask people in game, and all they can say is "Z0Mg I hAv3 a 8800gt with 4gigs of ram and a Dual Core and water cooling and l2p."

It isn't just me either, two of my friends (who love PR btw :) ) have 7950's and two 6800's(SLI) and have some of the same problems I have, only less severe because of how much better their computer is.

Why is this map so different when it comes to performance? 75% of the map is open desert, the rest is a fairly small air-base and town, hardly anything different from the 15 other maps. How is that I get 20-35 (with stuttering) but when on a 64 player Karkand or 64 player Fallujah I manage 50-60 FPS?

Is there a known problem with it? Or am I S.O.L.?

Try getting the free programme called ADVANCED WINDOWS CARE. Run this I will guarantee it will make a difference ?

Hey, don't worry I got the same problem too. I got an Ati X1600 512MB, with 2GB of RAM, and a AMD Dual core 2.4Ghz. That’s plenty to run Battlefield 2, but in Al Basrah I get some shitty FPS for the first few mins of entering the map. I'm a person who can't stand low graphics so I tend to have my Video setting all on high, with AA on 4x. With these settings I get an average of 60+FPS, but when I enter Al Basrah I get this lag issue for the first 5-10mins of the game. I'm guessing its my own fault for having my graphics on all high, but then again I don't have this problem with any other map in PR.

I've also noticed that after playing Al Basrah for about 10min and the lag goes away, when I get out of the server or PR and reload back to Al Basrah I don't get this few mins of lag :? :

No problems here. with Al Bashra. Greasy mullet is laggy as a mofo for me though...
x850 pro, 1 gig ram, 2GHz cpu
Mybe its some problem with the shaders? Anyone tried deleting the old and letting them rebuild?

7900 GTX SLI , 2 GB 533 MHZ RAM

this map always has lag on it, i have FRAPS on, my frame rate is on average 90 FPS with full details on and at a res of 1920 x 1200.

so at a frame rate of 90 , I still get lag, this must be server lag, as FRAPS is telling me my FPS is way above 30 .....

I think its teh way teh map is designed, even on teh amll version of teh map I still get lag... hmmm

Take care of your comps!! Defrag the harddrive and delete some tasks in the task manager. I know all my background programs and you should to!

Ctrl alt del. If your use memory is over 200mb you should do some cleaning. Write msconfig in Run.. Remove lots in the startup tab.

I've got a 6800GT and 2gb ram but a slower processor than you (AthlonXP 2400+). I used to run the same settings as you in vanilla BF2 (medium, no dynamics, 4xAA) without a problem, but to get PR running smoothly I've had to turn everything down to low with 2xAA... I can't give up my anti-aliasing entirely though, I tried it and I hate it.
I don't get much lag anymore. Only a little on Al Basrah, in the middle of the city. The desert areas and outskirts are completely smooth.
(Of course when the server starts to lag from people driving Land Rovers around I notice that too.)

Anyway, I guess you need to decide what you want more, framerate or eyecandy.

[edit]
If you do turn your settings down, after you close the game for the change to take effect it's a very good idea to clear out the texture cache before you restart the game. That will give you the best shot at a smooth framerate.

I use Battlefield Cleaner for that. Just google it.

Yeah, I just found your problem....
Al Basrah will give hard drive lag for a lot of people, when are you experiencing this problem? E.g. being in the air?

I had some incredibly weird video issues on this map yesterday, besides lag. The lag, however, was from the server not being fast enough, or having enough bandwidth, to support all of us (it should've set the limit to 50, and there were 60 of us in there). But for no apparent reason the sky and huge portions of everything visible to me became a solid brown color (no sprites, no textures, just BROWN). If I looked in the opposite direction for a few seconds it would fix it self...for a few seconds.

I actually managed to get a few kills with all this rot going on, but I had to leave.

I have everything jacked up to max and run at 1280x960 (Hamas, how did you get a higher res than 1280x1024? Mine maxes out there, but I have a 1680x1050 monitor). I don't lag because of hardware limitations on Al Basrah, though, but I have a C2D E6400 (2.13GHz), 2GB RAM and a 7950GT 512MB.

OS maintenance in Windows is extremely important. As much as it is better than FAT32, NTFS still sucks *** as a filesystem. I tried to run BF2 in Linux under WINE and even Cedega, but I didn't have any luck. So defrag, defrag, defrag!

i see a lot of people complaining about graphics and lag in al basrah. first of all: in 0,4 i had no problems to play in al basrah. in 0,5 (before the server update) i can only play good everywhere else than in the city. if i spawn in the city. i only get like 5 - 10 fps. when i am near the airport. then i get like 80+ fps. before i always had 70+ fps when i played. so if you are a new one to this mod. and having problems to play now. it may be server issues. or something with the client you have. but still. be sure to have lots of free memory when you start PRM. you CAN maybe expect to play PRM on medium settings if you have 1 gig of ram. a good graphics card is recommended. i play with 2x nvidia 6800 ultra (SLI). that works good for me. but still. if you have lots of ram. and a killer GPU. you still have to have a clean system. updated antivirus program. spyware remover (if you are that kind of a person surfing lots of porn ;P ) and be sure to have updated drivers for your hardware. and be kind to your computer.. go to run option in start menu and write: MSCONFIG.. go to startup and kill everything you dont need. if you dont know what to do there. i recommend a program showing you this. like this program. startuplist. http://www.snapfiles.com/download/dlstartuplist.html it's a freeware program. and do like those before me in this thread - defrag, kill shit, keep it clean. then you run bf2/PRM better.

I can play al basrah squeaky smooth until my used memory reaches it's peak and the game starts freezing up and hard as anything to exit the server.
