I am deeply saddened.. (PR related of course :p)

I installed PR v0.506 a week ago and have been playing offline, and I have to say.. it's freakin' awesome! ;) Prior to downloading it, I checked out youtube.com for a preview of the gameplay and was very drawn to it's realism, style, and most of all, the teamwork and tactics being put to practice.

But unfortunately, because of my location, I cannot play online. *The sky falls on my head* I can successfully connect to a server, but always get kicked out because of my bad ping (best at 550ms). I'm currently in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and have a 1MB DSL line.

I have been following this other dated mod for the Unreal Tournament engine, Infiltration, for several years now. But due to the lack of players, the community has become abit on the edge, and on several occurances, was unfriendly to newcomers. This caused to dev team to lose their drive, and thus, the project came to a standstill until today.

Infiltration is an ultra-realism mod, similar to PR. Ironsights, stamina, bulk, weight, hellava armory with each weapon customisable using an array of modular attachments. Free-aim (so players can't stick tape to the center of the screen), flashbangs, true implementation of the NVG, wire-triggered claymore mines (you manually setup the wires).. the list goes on. An elaborate review is available here: http://dslyecxi.com/botg_infiltration.html

Simply put, PR is what Infiltration could have been. And that works very nicely for me. :D

So here's the question..

Is there anyone interested in setting up a PR server in Asia? Probably in Thailand, Japan, Korea, or China. There're plenty of vanilla BF2 servers in these locations already, and I can play at a ping of 200ms average on any of the servers there. But, hey, c'mon.. who wants to play vanilla BF2? I mean, seriously. Ew. I think I speak for countless other players out there such as myself who doesn't have the chance to play because of their location.

What is the acceptable ping to play on most servers, anyway (before getting kicked out by the script)? Why is there such a limitation being imposed, i.e. does one lagging player slowdown all the other players?

(A word of thanks, if you have read this far :D )

I was always under the impression that one person doesn't affect the whole server, but with all the "kick high pingers they are lagging me LOL!L!L!" I see, apparently it does?

Anyways, it seems as most auto-kickers will boot people with a ping > 200. I think it's not necessarily that you are lagging everyone else, but that at a high ping, you become (especially with the BF2 hitboxes and whatnot) near impossible to hit. Can't imagine at a 500 ping.

Not true, as vanilla BF2 is still playable at a 500 ping. I managed to get some kills too (not many not due to lag, but because I suck.. hahaha). And to think that 40+ players with variable pings (like mine) still plays okay.

200 ping eh? Thanks for the info. :)

Well, seems the BF2 netcode was quite well designed to compensate lag, because as I've mentioned, it's still easy to kill and be killed at 500 ping (I just hate the ridiculously wide conefire in vanilla BF2.. > :( ).

yeh auto kickers are so annoying,

a little off topic but there is a japanese poe2 server that has it set at 200 and is always populated with good rotations and i get booted for 210 ping...

so annoying..........

imo i think it should be encouraged to take auto ping kick off of pr servers as it just limits the servers the comunity can play for barely any difference since its a 3 hit kill in most cases with any weapon.

Im pretty sure there is already a Japanese server running, tho dont expect english.

A quick look gives 3 japanese, 1 korean, and 1 tiawanese

Even if they're all empty, try idling in one for a while, you'll often get people joining.

The Jackass server gets really busy at peak periods in Japan.

actually sometimes a person with a high ping can make the whole server lag, but it is quite difficult to hit something with a ping of over 150.

trust me, i´ve played in the tourney and it wasnt always that fun playing with a 190-200 ping.
sometimes you switched your weapon, fired and about 1-3 seconds later you suddenly have your old weapon in your hand firing an at rocket into the ground below you, when you actually wanted to drop a fielddressing...

so the autokick is indeed usefull, i cant imagine how it is to play with a ping of 500 when you already get problems with a +200 ping. the autokick just makes room for another player, because the high-pinger only takes away a valuable slot for others.

about the asian server - it surely would be interesting, though i wonder, do you get that bad pings on all the servers?
the problem is, that i dont think we have (m)any (apart from griffon who doesnt count) asian members on the board, probably because of the language barrier - but in fact i dont know if we got any players from asia at all (apart from you of course ;) )

that being said, welcome to the community craetech :)

edit: rofl, okay apparantly there are asian members and servers and so on ^^

Ahh Infiltration, where I and others got started with realism mods years ago.... I see some familiar names in servers in PR but not sure if they are the same people - hmm perhaps an offtopic poll in there...

I thought your ping affected you and you only...at least that's what some guy was yelling on an AMerica's Army server...they kept kicking him for ping.

High pinger does not slow down the server. The issue is that this player is hard to kill/buggy. I believe that historically high-pingers were hated due to speed-hacks (where you use the ping difference to make your character move/shoot faster).

Actually, in BF2 those players have no advantage, as they can not hit anything.
So highpinger is generally just a problem, as they block a slot and can not do anything useful.

That's an interesting way to look at it. While PR is a great mod and is pretty much the only one worth playing on the BF2 engine, I would not go so far as to say that it "is what Infiltration could have been". There are boatloads of features that Infiltration has that PR does not and probably cannot have due to the engine limitations. The scope of the two is also drastically different. I really don't see them as being comparable aside from that both go for realism.

I stand corrected. There *are* servers in Asia. What puzzles me at this point is that vanilla BF2 plays well on Japan servers at 200 ping without any warping for me (even piloting halos under buildings without crashing). At the same time, I get a 500+ ping on Japan servers for PR.

Also my bad for sounding like I was comparing Infiltration and PR as equals. What I meant was Infiltration was heading towards large-scale infantry combat with drivable support personnel transport, and this is seen in PR. Indeed Infiltration is number one in ultra-realism (and I love that :) ). In the mean while, PR satisfies my realism urge in other aspects, such as having a chain of command, better teamwork features (built-in VoIP, teammates in radar, quick comms/orders GUI menu, etc.), destroyable buildings (including strategic objects such as mortars), to name a few.

And at "works very nicely for me", I meant that as I have something to look forward to again. Not that PR is a replacement of Infiltration. ;)
