In game PR tutorial

I had the idea last night that having an in game tutorial for Project Reality could help beginners learn the ropes quickly, without having to read the guide (like me I missed the guide, and I got a bad first impression of this excellent mod...not everyone would stick with it though).

I suggest doing a tutorial thing like you get in vBF2 - I am a voice director, so I could record a professional voiceover for it, and i believe the code already exists for this in vBF2, so it would be simply a case of writing the scripts, and have them activate when you first use a kit etc.

You could even ensure people do the tutorial before they are actually allowed onto multiplayer...so it could walk them through the basics of the gametype, and what to do when you are a squad leader, commander, or if you want to be a pilot or a crewman etc.

I think this would really help the beginners, and it would prevent all the veterans from having to spend quite as much time as they currently do answering the same old questions.

Thoughts?

No sh*t, I was thinking about posting a similar thing today :D . But I didn't do it, 'cause I figured there's little chance the new guys will follow the "single player" thing. They just want to get out there and fight, so they click "multiplayer".

Regarding the "force tutorial"-thing, I'm not sure if there's a way to somehow make this possible. I don't think so, but then again, I keep being amazed by what the devs create :p .

I hate the tutorial guy in vBF2 so I don't know. Maybe an option at install to turn on the tutorial or not. It sounds like a great idea.

I noticed you are based in the UK. Maybe we can get more realistic Brit ingame voices. Apparently the current ones are too chipper for the current military.

That Voice over thing comes on Multiplayer aswell. It has for me, so don't go saying it hasn't.

By the way, use serach functiion, as this has been suggested before.
Infact, I did it.

Yep, the issue has been up before and think that it’s basically a question of target groups.

Trying to design a prototype for a useful commander-training program I’ve so far identified at least three core groups of players interested in some commander training. (Through discussion and intuition)

Made a poll to try and see if these imagined groups could be verified. And until now the picture doesn’t diverge completely from the initial descriptions I’ve made.

Groups I identified before the poll was made:

1. Want to train as much stuff as possible.
2. Want to train basic stuff.
3. Want to train advanced stuff.

Believing that every target group in theory could get something useful out of a in game tutorial like the one you describe, i guess I just tries to address that these tutorials need to reach out for the right type of players. (Is a noob pilot necessarily a new pr player?)

I mean, lets take a “Transport Helicopter Pilot” tutorial as a fast thought out example:

Basic tutorial:

A.
Takeoff and down again.

B.
Transporting troops.
---

Advanced tutorial:

C.
Stay alive in the battle environment. I.e. Spiral descending.

D.
Formations. Altitudes. Levels. Paths. Corridors. Specific zones. Thinking in ship movements.

E.
Working with other air unit types plus air and ground teamwork.
---

Well...just my additional comments to the subject.

Regards

Mike

Id love to see a narrated "basic PR video"

It would be fairly easy to make a gameplay tut IMO, and to show it being done in a fashion that is less of a guide and more of a "ho hum here is me playing the game and doing things that probably confuse you"

like have someone spawn in and a narrator go "now little johnny wants a kit, so he does this and this"

"oh he wants to fly that handy plane, well he ought to wait 30 seconds for the engines to warm up or hell crash and tk everyone!"

IE just go through a small round of play highliting all of PRs gameplay changes, but doing it in a manner that makes it look like gameplay

The current brit voices are indeed much to tea sipping :) they sound like they live in the 19th century.

I can certainly help with new brit voices, in fact this was one of the main things I did for the Mare Nostrum mod for Red Orchestra (not out yet)...

If a dev wants samples let me know.
