Ideas on prone stance

hey all, i was thinking of some ideas to help get rid of the current issue (really just an issue with the BF2 engine) of the ability to go prone instantly, often being able to shoot back and kill whoever got the drop on you. Its a very frustrating problem when you take your time, aim, then fire a few rounds at a medium distance target, only for them to go prone and score a headshot on you.
Of course the problem is that in real life you can and probably would drop to the ground quickly if you were being shot at, so i think the best solution would be to have do different ways to go prone.
One would be a 'quick drop', aka throwing yourself flat to the ground, hopefully behind some cover. Maybe for this you could just press Z quickly as it is currently used. You would hit the ground fast but not be able to look down your sights/fire for a few seconds while you reposition yourself and get over the shock of the move.
The other way would be a shift to the prone firing position, not usually done while under fire. This would get you into position slower but you would be able to fire as soon as your down. This would be more like going prone in a game like operation flashpoint or ghost recon. Takes a second or two to get down but its a natural move and not a quick throwing down of the body. Maybe this could be done by holding down Z for a second, or otherwise mapping it do a different key.
I am aware that some of this might be hardcoded and unable to be changed, but just thought i would just suggest it.
